I have a 2002 with 178,000 miles with 6637, 4" turbo back exhaust, Hydra with Gearhead, new Riffraff Billet wheel and everything else is pretty much stock. The up pipes have been replaced. Have done a boost leak test with no issues, I can hit 26 PSI while towing. When I am towing grades (I live in Oregon, we have some decent hills) I have to back out of fuel to keep EGT's in check. I can hit 1250 pretty easy. I down shift prior to incline, but still hit high EGT's and have to let up. I have plenty of pedal and power, but can't utilize it. What are your thoughts? I also get high tranny temps while towing grades, I can hit 220 on big slow grades. I have a 6.0 cooler, could it be plugged or need to be replaced? Could it be that I might need a new radiator? Thanks for reading and any advice.
I live in Vancouver, WA so, I experience the same mountain passes for towing our TT to camp. I also have the 6.0 Dorman trans cooler and seldom see 190. I suggest having the trans serviced to see if there are any obvious issues, I have a great lead for this sort of work if you're near Portland. Regarding EGT's, the first thing that comes to mind is what tunes are you running and do you have the ability to datalog? Injector pulsewidth is often times extended too far for stock injectors with some tunes and could be the issue. Try using the stock tune if not and see what results you get or you're lugging the engine. What RPM are you seeing the high EGT at?
I had issues pulling hills with my toyhauler here in the Sierras. I put in the 6.0 cooler and it helped but the one thing I did that made a big difference was change my gearing from 3.73 to 4.56 gears
My tranny temps drop approximately 30 degrees. I am running 37s on the truck that is the reason for the taller gears.
Keep the RPM's high and constant in order to get the air in and exhaust out.
Are you using the heavy tow tune from Gear Head while towing? I tow a 12K lbs 5th wheel with very similar mods as you and when I am climbing a grade with the trailer in tow and boost is ~28 PSI with RPM ~2500-2800 hold tight ~1000.
Of course if I change the tune to the daily driver, 1200 degrees comes on quick when I tried it once while towing.
Other than that, a bigger turbo like a GT38R or KC38R or T4, then single shot injectors and then an upgraded intercooler.
Sorry for the delay, I typically use a Gearhead tune that I run all the time, it is not a towing specific tune. I have used PHP's generic tunes, 80 tow, 60 tow and 80 daily driver. The PHP tunes get my tranny hot and don't seem to have the power needed. Sounds like I may need to contact Gearhead and get some towing specific tunes.
There you go. You need a heavy tow tune. Don't bother with a "light tow" just go straight to the heaviest offered. This is what you need to use in the PNW. Most of these tuners live in areas that don't have the aggressive terrain we do so their heavy is about right.
Cody here as well. Winter warmup, tow, daily, and performance. I don't have a use for the performance tune, it's little more than a tire lathe. My DD can make some warm EGTs, but my tow tune flat can't... not even if I tried.
