i have an E350 15 passenger bus with a starcraft body on it. It has a brand new motor with less than 10,00 miles on it. I am thinking about a 4x4 conversion as I live in snow country. We just received 22 feet since New Years so this is a no brainer. so the following questions are something I need answers for
How easy is it to make this conversion?
Can I acquire a front axel assembly from an E350 club van and do a bolt for bolt change out?
What front end assembly should I look for specifically.
I know I will need to install a transfer case, is this an easy retro-fit to my existing transmission or do I need to change the tranny as well.
Can a qualified Ford dealer or good 4x4 shop perform this and an estimated cost.
I know what Quigley needs for this job, not being cheap, but if its nuts and bolts and a direct changeover, then i am a decent mechanic.
Am i suicidal for even thinking about this. The van was a sweet deal and anything close to this would be 85g's or better.
Put some chains on it, a winch on the front, and toss a land anchor in the back.
I don't understand why people always go straight for a 4x4 conversion. It's literally the least bang for your buck, and you will likely be undermining your vans reliability unless you have Quigley or somebody else expensive do it.
Don't do it. 4x4 conversions are "look at me" vanity upgrades for people with way too much money.
Well, we need to know what year your van is. And depending on what your spring preferences is, will determine the specific front axle that will be suitable for your conversion.
Ford never offered a 4x4 from factory. Quigley usually performed the 4x4 conversions with factory ford and other proprietary parts but the vehicle warranty was supported after the conversion.
