One of my customers has a 2011 f150 5.0 . He says that in the last 4 months while driving at 60 the rpms will jump from around 1500 to 3000 then go back to normal . What would cause this ?

Hard to say. But with this little bit of information given it sounds like for some reason the truck is downshifting from 6th to 4th gear. You'll need to provide more detailed information pertaining to the issue for a better answer.
It's impossible to say without checking for codes. And the places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
Has anyone checked the fluid level? I have seen several of these leaking at the bulkhead connector, sometimes it's can be a slow leak. maybe it's a few quarts low?
Sorry about not keeping up on this.
I asked about a tuner, because mine on the 93 Race MPT tune, it does something similar. It doesn't grab that many rpm, right around 500, on cruise, in drive, while going up slight grades. No downshift, but seems like the torque converter is unlocking, then locking back up. Sometimes it even jerks.
Now with my 5* tunes, this doesn't happen.
I know it sounds like my tune is causing it, but I would like to hear what the outcome is on a stock tune. Might be something to keep in mind.
If so, I'd check the bulkhead connector for the common leak.
If it's dry, then you've got either a contaminated "molded lead frame" inside the transmission, or a plugged up filter. There was a TSB on the molded lead frames in those model years...some people even had the trans. shift to 1st gear at interstate speeds on them. Talk about scary!
