I'm sure the second part of the title has been answered, but with all the talk of inaccurate 34 gallon tanks I was wondering if the same ill measuring occurs on the DEF.
1. Is DEF level gauge accurate
2. Whats been the mileage before I have to fill up on DEF
Gauge is much better than the older models, it will move as you burn up DEF. The new trucks seem to use much less DEF than the older trucks in my opinion.
This new system gives you a pop up at 500 miles until empty. Last gen gave 800 until empty. Got my first pop up this past weekend. About 50 miles before I hit 5000, I got the pop up. Went to the coast and I kept checking the level just to be safe. On the way back, I pulled the golf cart/trailer bucking a 17 mph wind and it just "ate up" the def like candy. When I left the coast, it said I had 220 miles until empty. I went about 60 miles...and got a pop up that said I had "DEF Tank empty" 100 miles until truck will go into limp mode @ 50 mph. I left that screen up and it started counting down as I drove. Went about another 20 miles and bought some DEF at the Shell. The trailer weight and the wind really put a dent in what I thought I could do on the way home. There are plenty of warnings that show where you are at with the level and what will happen to the truck if you don't take care of the level....LOL
I tow a 53ft trailer which has a massive front wall and huge wind resistance @ ~24k lbs and it is much better than my '16 for DEF use
Crazy, I'm experiencing the opposite. 5k miles on my truck and the gauge reads just under 25% left. On my 2016, at 5,000 miles, it would be sitting on 25%.
Of course, these new trucks have 7.4 gallon DEF tanks compared to the 5.0 gallon tanks of the 2016.
Yep...I agree Troverman. Basically, when I hit 5000 miles, I got the 500 until empty warning. Seemed my 2011 would give me a bit more...more like 6000 + between DEF fillups...as an "average".......
I was putting in ~$10 of DEF every 4000km on my '16 and so far in 13,000km on my '17 I've put in maybe $23. First 5k km on mine the guage didn't even move, was wondering if it was in steps like the '16 but it finally started to move eventually and I just keep her topped up now.

With your savings in DEF maybe you can afford an 'upgrade' Mishimoto radiator! Lol.
I got my 500 mile DEF warning at 3350 miles, but I have been towing quite a bit. I think I got it down to 300 miles left then put in 6 gallons of DEF. It showed full on the DEF gage, but I wasn't sure how close to the top of the tank it was because I only bought 6 gallons.
So I have about 4500 miles on the truck and the DEF guage reads just under 1/4 of a tank left. Yesterday I get the 500 mile DEF warning. Seems to me that the gauge might be a little off. If I went 4500 miles on 3/4 of tank, I should be able to go about 6000 on a full tank. The truck thinks it can only go 5000 miles, could the guage be that far off? I would never run it down that low, but just a little surprised to see that warning come on.
