I have a 2017 Platinum diesel that needs a new short block. Bought the truck late October. Have 6600 miles on 6.7 diesel. I brought the truck in at 5500 miles for an oil leak. They said it was the oil filter adapter seal that was leaking and all is good now. 1100 miles later or about 3 weeks I have the same oil leak. Brought it back in and now it seems after they took the front cover off they say it needs a short block. Don't quite know what is going on here. I have seen posts about an oil pump problem but I never had any warning lights or any indication that there was a low oil pressure problem. I took the truck in for an external oil leak. Now major surgery is going to happen and I'm confused.
You certainly have a right to know what part failed that requires the new engine. The only thing I'm confused about is the oil filter is nowhere near the front engine cover.
Congrats, a minor leak revealed a major problem that you might not have encountered until the warranty was ended.
Its covered, they'll replace it, they'll provide a loaner.
Aside from the inconvenience I'd say you are lucky.
I have to say the Ford reginal customer service rep has been helpful. When he got involved the attitudes changed from service manager and the Ford Focus which was the only loaner available too me suddenly is being changed to something nicer.
Having to get the regional manager involved just to get the service and repect you as a customer should already get is what's wrong with dealerships. Luckily I've made quit a good friend of the co owner of my dealership he even cut me a hell of a break on a repair on one of our transit vans that were way the hell out of warranty.
Interested to hear exactly what the problem was that was so severe that it required a short block replacement. If it was some sort of casting or machining defect, this probably won't be the only one we hear about.
Well the straightest answer I could get so far is that the engine casting to the front cover has a defect and it will not allow a good seal so the oil is leaking out. I'm guessing this is a rear main seal even though they say front cover but not sure. I spoke to the Ford customer service rep and tried of course to have them buy it back or give a new truck. As expected they don't feel that this situation meets those criteria. I asked about the Diminished value since every service record seems to hit Carfax and now this will read "replaced engine". Heard every story about how this is actually is a positive thing but that is a total crock of S**t. Anyone buying this truck after me is going to bust my chops about this and beat my up on price including a trade to the dealer. At this point they have now agreed to offer a 7 year /200k power train extended warranty for free. Don't know if there is much else to do, they are fixing the truck and at least for the time being I am in an Expedition vs the original loaner Focus which sucked.
It's unfortunate that this has happened but they are built by man and sometimes it happens. I personally wouldn't worry about whether owning it or buying it being repaired by a Ford dealership. Plus they are extending warranty. Sure it a pain in the butt why they repair it but they are repairing it.
