Need help deciding

Hey everyone, new to the site as a member, however I have read from the shadows for a while now. I've got a 2005 f350 6.0. Stock with the exception of 4" straight pipe, blue spring, coolant filtration and edge insight. I've replaced the T-Stat already. Fluids changed regularly. Would have to check when the coolant was changed for sure but want to say it was around 115k. 140544 on the odometer. I've got a few questions. I'm wondering if my oil cooler is on the way out but would like some other opinion's from yall. On the drove in this morning this is what I got (these numbers are also what it normally is at, not just a one time event): ECT - 184, EOT - 197, MPH - 70 relatively flat road, AMB TEMP - 47. When I would tow in the summer I normally see, ECT - 174 (bad t stat), EOT - 200-215, MPH - 65-70, AMB TEMP - 78-90.

Second question, I also think it might be time for a new FICM. At cold start, if not plugged in truck will start first crank then die a second or two later. 2-3 tries later it will hold an idle, a very rough idle and will also emit black smoke from the exhaust. If plugged in (AMB TEMP around 20) truck starts and idles just fine. Is it time for a FICM upgrade or replacement?

3rd question, sorry. After sitting for a while while at work, when I start the truck and drove off it smokes white/blue like crazy. ECT about 110ish. It continues to smoke until arundel 130*. Bad turbo seals?

Thank's everyone for the help!

-Brandon

Hard to say for sure on the oil cooler without some other information (maybe your ECT sensor is not reading correctly).

What are your ECT, EOT and transmission temperature readings after the engine has cooled down for 12+ hours?

On the FICM, I would contact Ed at FICMrepair.com and talk to him. He won't talk you into one if you don't need one.

White/blue smoke CAN be fuel related (injector, FICM, etc).

Are you seeing any drop in oil level?

You should check to see if you have any codes. See if an autoparts store will loan you a code reader, or download TorquePro (android) or Forscan

It sounds like you have a case of injector stiction. I would try an oil additive, I prefer Archoil 9100, it has worked best for me, there are others out there. After 4 years I finally replaced the injectors with OEM rebuilds from Ford. Yor FICM voltage will tell the story on that, if you are below 47.5 it's on it's way out, as others have said, talk to Ed@ficmrepair he will steer you in the right direction. You also need a t-stat pronto, only when the engine is up to proper temp can you really compare ECT to EOT, but I do suspect that you are close to needing a cooler based on your temps.

Despite having replaced the TS, your coolant temp is still cool for the ambient. You still may have a TS problem depending on brand or install. And as Mark was indicating, there may be sensor problems. So before any cooler discussion, the readings need to be confirmed. If the coolant sensor is off 6-7 degrees, correcting that would show the oil cooler is fine.

As far as the cold start issue, what you describe also can be due to the glow plug system not working. That needs to be checked before condemning the FICM.

The third question is the same as the second. At that temp the glow plugs are an important parts of emissions control so back to GP or FICM.

While your monitoring coolant and oil temps, you really also need to check the injector voltage supplied by the FICM as that would tell if the power side of the FICM is hurt.

I'll check the ECT plug out next since it has a new TS already.
After 12 hours of sithing the temp will be at ambient. After 4 hours they are at 120 EOT 124 ECT 95 TFT.
I don't have any codes from what my edge tells me.
I also don't have any drop in oil level.
My FICM is at 49.5 down to 48 at lowest I've seen. So I'll try they oil addictive for stictation.
My INJ PWR is 50.7 ICP V .8-.9 at idle. ICP PSI 620ish at idle. FICM 49.5. BATT 13.7.

Without actual numbers at ambient "cold soak", I would then assume that you have a plugging oil cooler.

Regarding FICMs, the voltage can tell you if the power side is bad, but even with good voltage the FICM may be bad.

Unfortunately, I think that confirms you are plugging in your oil cooler.
