06 f550 6.0 diesel 135,000 miles truck runs good but when going on the interstate check guage comes on n engine temp goes all the way to red I pull ova turn truck off n just turn key to read temp n it's not running hot so start truck n go again n runs fine does it if u go ova 60 mph if u stay below 60 no problems changed thermostat n sensor any suggestions
Good chance it's a clogging oil cooler. You need a device to check oil and coolant temp. Several smart phone apps, ScanGaugeII from autozone or online, or laptop software and OBDII adapter. Oil temp should stay within 15 degrees of coolant temp at 70mph cruse fully warmed up.
Several other possible problems coud cause this but oil cooler is most likely and except for checking coolant level is first place to start looking.
If you continue driving it the EGR cooler will start leaking. Steam/white smoke out tail pipe and possible serious/expensive engine damage follows quickly.
did it seem like the motor was actually hot when the water temp gauge showed hot? Do you hear your engine fan rev up like a jet when the gauge shows hot?
I Think she misunderstood, the cooling fan kicks on at 215deg, not the big radiator fan , Rusty is right you need a way to monitor the values , I use the Scan Gauge II from Auto zone, and as Money pit and Bizmic said the dash gauge don't really tell all or it could be Instrument panel Issue. On the degus bottle the level should be at or just below Min line, any lower than this you take a risk of blowing the heads. Do you see any coolant dripping any where under the truck or on top side Valley of Engine. If the Oil cooler is plugging or plugged your Temps will Spike and then all hell will brake . need to get a monitor
Bingo! Mine did something similar back while under warranty. It was determined at the dealership that I had a faulty instrument cluster. The Service Tech stated that there was a bad batch and I got one of them. He said that dust made its way into the cluster, causing the erroneous readings. I'd check with scangauge to see if readings are normal to rule in or out running hot or instrument cluster failure.

Just to refresh, at or just below the min line after a overnight cold sit. After the engine has been up to operating temps an inch or so below the min line is acceptable. Is this correct?

Correct or could be an 1'' above at operating temp but never at MAX
