I picked up the 292 last weekend and got it all disassembled so I can get the crankshaft up to the engine shop. Hopefully, this crank isn't full of cracks like the original on Earl's 272.
Anyway, bolted onto the 292 was an automatic tranny. I know zero about automatics, and my parts books don't go past 1956. The part number on the main casing is C3TP-7006-A. Anybody know what that is? Maybe a Ford-O-Matic or something?
According to my 57-63 autolite text catalog, it seems to be a allison tranny by the #'s. It doesn't have your exact # but the Letter's and # spacing are exact. I'm not too certian but does the tranny seem to be large but no overdrive extension? -4speed(I'm probably just confused and its a cruise-o-matic)
I don't know enough about what a "normal" auto tranny would look like to tell you if it's large, or has an OD extension.
I was told it was a 3-speed but no info on whether it had OD or not. The numbers look like standard Ford part numbers, you know, decade letter, year digit, one or two extra letters/numbers, then the base part number (7006), then a letter suffix. By that logic, it's a 1963 something or other (prefix C3). The 7006 is the right base for tranny parts, although my older parts books list 7005 as the main casting base number.
It can't be a Allison tranny, as they were in larger Ford trucks, F-500 and up. Best way to tell is one piece case w/bellhousing=Ford-o-matic 3 speed. 2 piece case( separate bellhousing )= Cruise-o-matic. Ford-o-matics were pre 1961, Cruise-o-matics were 61 or later. Are there any letters on the tag such as PBY-C? In my years as a Ford Parts man, many engine- tranny sets were replaced with later stuff over the years. You can't trust the parts books as gospel, as they had many mistakes. Take a look at the tag and post what you find.
Going by the case number itself, it's out of a truck. C=1960, 3=1963, t= truck series,P= tranny engineering. I have car books also and I don't see it there. That's why I need the other letters to try to nail it down.
Wasn't there a transmission spotters guide on the tech articles listing a while ago? I think I d/l ed one when I was trying to decide what tranny I had. It really helped me. MYbe it's still there now.
Yeah Steve, I took a look at the tech article before posting. It has a lot of info, but everything there looks to be for trannys built after 1964.
From the info Barry and the rest of you have provided, it's almost certainly a Cruise-o-matic. It has a separate bell housing.
Is there any demand for these things or are they essentially boat anchors?
I guess I really asked the question to find out if this thing might be useful to somebody. I will never have a need for it, but I hate to just junk it if they are hard to find and somebody would like to have one. I'm not really asking about it's value, except to find out if somebody would like to save it from the crusher. One way or the other, it's leaving my garage.
The Cruise-o-matic was a good tranny. It was the fore runner to the C6 tranny, which is bullet proof. I certainly would not trash it. You could advertise it and someone may want it. There aren't that many laying around anymore.
George,
Does the tranny bellhousing have 'mounting ears' so that it will bolt into the pickup crossmember? This would make it more de$ireable.....
Adios,
Brett
Dick, thanks for the link. I thought I had looked over the tranny pretty carefully to get the numbers off it, and I didn't find a tag. The picture in the link gave me a hint of where to look. I finally found the tag down in the tranny pan bolt flange, covered by a bunch of gunk. The numbers are:
The link Dick provided doesn't list the 289 as one of the engines using this tranny???
Brett, no mounting ears on the bell housing. The mount appears to be a transverse flat on the bottom of the casting, behind the pan. Maybe 10" wide with a bolt hole near each end.
I'll advertise it in the classifieds here on FTE and probably on eBay. Just letting you guys know here first so if somebody wants it they can e-mail me off-line. I ain't going to be asking much, although there is a Cruise-O-Matic on eBay now with a starting bid of $50 and a Buy-It-Now number of $200. Seems a little high to me - but what do I know?
The PCT-G tranny came from a 64 Ford Galaxie with a column shift and 289 engine. It is considered a FX version (light duty)of the Cruise-o-matic tranny
I've done my duty to my 1948-1960 FTE friends by indicating on the message board that I'm going to try to find a good home for it. Now I'm going to put in some low $$$ ads and see if I can't find somebody who wants to save it from the crusher.
