Hello all, I'm a new member here, but have been reading in for years- you guys have some great knowledge to share.
My question. I have a e99 f250, ext cab, short bed, 4r100HD & 7.3L obviously, and am looking for a full 4" turbo back system. All of the kits, (diamond eye, banks, whoever) mostly all say 99.5 - up or just 99 - up and don't say if they'll fit the early 99. Mine is a 7/98 truck. So I'm unsure of what to order. I know the turbo is smaller on the e99 & wasn't sure as to what I needed to do. Additionally, is a 4" down pipe too large? I'm mostly stock besides a k&n intake, ts6 running PHP tunes, and a lame pieced together 3.5" exhaust from the previous owner. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to the forum. The 99.5 engines started with engine #896812. If the kits say there's difference then there is, and it seems your question is what engine do you have. With a 7/98 build date, I'm certain it's an early '99. A quick check is to look at the orange/reddish boots that connect the spider to the intake plenums. If those boots are stepped, meaning the spider has a larger diameter than the plenum openings, then you have a e99. There's a picture of this here. If you look under the third Read First post on this forum, you'll find lots of tech info for your truck.
The only difference I can think of that would affect the exhaust is the 99.5 turbo mounts a little higher.
Why are you interested in the 4" exhaust? Is your current one just a badly cobbled together piece of crap that leaks and/or sounds harsh? If you're looking for leaks, check your up-pipes going from the exhaust manifolds to the back of the turbo. The factory up-pipes are known for leaking, especially on nearly 20 year old trucks. A common upgrade is to install bellowed up-pipes. These won't leak.
SaintITC has pretty much nailed it...the only difference is the height of the pedestal E vs L99. My truck had 4" SS pipe turbo to tail and I upgraded the intake to 99.5+ parts. I had to disassemble my exhaust at the first break to get the downpipe to mate to the turbo but I was able to make it happen. Clearance is tight (to say the least) in several places but it worked. I would recommend going SS if you can afford it, you will inevitably have to replace aluminized or galvanized at some point down the road.
What's the original factory exhaust made of? As far as I know, my truck has it's original exhaust, and it's in great shape. Obviously it's filthy with 250k on it now, but no rust. Was SS an option back then? I'll have to find a magnet...
I used this on my E99. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/s...250-super-duty
Reason I went with it was for the muffler. If you get sick of the rumble you can toss the muffler on(I did) As well as it being a universal kit. Meaning I have a super cab and had one pipe left over. The CC would use the longer pipe I did not. Good luck and welcome.
