I've suspected an exhaust leak since I bought the truck last month, and I finally got fed up and took it to an exhaust shop. They told me it wasnt underneath, that it was actually a pollution line and they don't even work on them. They said they usually send it to one of the Ford dealers. My question is, how expensive is this part, and can I do without it? I know on my brothers GMG 454, when he put headers on it he took off all the EGR stuff. There's no E-testing in my area, so there's no worry there. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks for your time!!
Its likely the air injection manifold is the exhaust noise problem , Its has tubes that screw into the head & they break . When the engine is cold fresh air is directed into the exhaust stream that helps speed the heating of the catalytic converters via the air injection manifold .Im sure you will hear different , but removing emissions equipment is an outdated idea . This particular system robs no power from the engine & removing it will not make the engine run better or the truck have more power . All the emissions equipment is designed to work all together , removing a part of it here & there will only cause more problems . The air injection manifold is around $80 the best I recall . I know it sucks to drop that much for a thin metal pipe , but thats the nature of engines today . There are other vehicles out there that have far more $$$ parts die more often . You got 9 yrs out of yours .
Thanks for the information, Paul! Is this something that I can do myself, or should I have a shop do it? What all do I have to remove to get to the part, and if I let it go for a while will it hurt anything? Thanks again!
Do a visual inspection of the air injection manifold , reach in there when the engine is cold & see if any of the tubes are broken . Is the exhaust noise present like I described , Only when the vehicle is moving ? Its an easier job than removing the lower intake & exhaust manifolds . You will have to remove the upper intake & everything associated with it & if the air injection manifold tubes are broken its simply a matter of unscrewing the 6 tubes , removing the old one & installing the new AIM . First verify thats the problem & the cause of the noise .
