Surface Rust

Hey guys,
I have a few spots of surface rust on the hood of my 73'. Is there anyway to get rid of it without damaging the paint? Anyone have some good home remedies? Any good products out there?

Thanks!

If you've got surface rust, the paint in that area is gone. I'd sand it to get the rust of and spray some primer over the area to prevent any more rust.

good advice, except that primer alone will not seal the metal against moisture. primer is still permiable. you could also use a "rust converter" prior to priming. Rust-o-lium makes a decent spray on converter. takes 24 hours to cure before priming.

spray a coat of paint on it to seal it up. anything is better than nothing. you can always make it purdy later if you don't have the time to match it up right now.

as is the case with any type of detioration, sooner is better than later.

CLR!!

There's more paint under that rust then you think. Get some CLR (calcium, lime, and rust) and wipe it off. You'll be surprised at the result!

Check this page out from the Impala forum. This stuff is AMAZING!

The primer that you need to use is called epoxy primer. It should be a 2-part epoxy primer. It will bond very well with the bare metal and keep any moisture from getting underneath.
