Hey Mark, you appear to be the person I need to talk to. I have a 93 with a Ford with a E4OD and when I get to highway speeds the truck had a thrumbing noise. I thought it was the driveshaft but I checked it and it starts when I am in overdrive and giving it gas only. Or so I thought. Today I turned off the OD and just driving around town it does it when I give it gas in 3rd. The whole truck vibrates. I suspect a rebuild on the transmission but I could sure use some advice before I go that route. I am about to sell the truck and really do not want to drop more money into it. Thanks
I can't imagine how the trans could cause this. But I've seen bad u-joints cause this numerous times.
Meant to post back a lot sooner, however, the last couple of years have been tougher than usual for me, long story short, I FINALLY got this thing back home a few days ago!
I was able to drive it around yesterday and confirm Lead Head's thought of the coast clutch sticking by leaving the overdrive enabled and I DID have engine braking in third. I pulled the pan off last night and there were A LOT of shavings on the magnet, but no big chunks of metal or indication of anything broken, at least as far as I can see.. I know the fluid "looks" burnt on the bottom of the pan, however It didn't smell that way when I pulled the pan and my trans temp never got above 150 according to my Auto Meter gauge..
Now what? Is there anyway I can get the coast clutch un-stuck without R&R? Could it be the solenoid still?

I suppose you could leave the trans in the truck, pull the engine, and rebuild the trans without R&R the trans. But that seems like A LOT harder way to do it.
The short answer is that with that much junk in the pan this trans needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
