From the looks of things the previous owner hacked up the transmission lines near the starter on my truck. They are currently rigged with hose and clamps, which has started to leak. I would like to know if anyone knows the best place to get this. I have a gift card from LMC that I'd like to use, but they don't seem to list this application. I did see another thread about transmission lines, and it was suggested to call LMC. I've checked NPD, Summit, and most of the parts stores websites. I see nothing newer than a 1990 C6. Does anybody know who carries these for a 1994 5.0 4R70W?
I don't know of anyone who would have the pre-bent lines except for Ford themselves. Transmission lines are honestly quite easy to make yourself with some 3/8" tubing and some rubber hose. Some vehicles come from the factory with rubber lines for the transmission cooler.
I was afraid going to Ford might be the only option. That's assuming they still have them. I will check into that and see.
The problem with using rubber hose and clamps is that the lines don't have nipples, since they were cut. There is a short section near the radiator support done this way originally which seems to work fine.
I was thinking about using compression fittings and tubing to repair it. Does anyone know what size line this is? I was thinking it's 5/16 or 3/8.
The transmission cooler isn't under much pressure - I've never had a problem just hose clamping rubber lines to straight tubing. If you're really worried about it, you can rent a flaring tool, and put a flare on the end of the line for the hose/clamp to grab.
Does anyone know for sure what size these trans lines are? I measured them with a caliper and got 0.304 inches. A 3/8 line would be 0.375 and a 5/16 would be 0.3125. I am going to just get two short pieces of line and patch the missing section with compression style unions like these.
Once again, I wouldn't worry about it. Get a piece of rubber hose that fits snugly over the lines, and then double clamp each side with the good fuel-injection clamps.
If you really want to fix it right, bend a new line yourself, or find a shop near you to bend one for you. It isn't that hard to do. Classic Tube, or a similar outfit would probably make one for you, and it would be factory spec, but it would cost. Personally, I would run a section of appropriate rubber hose as has already been suggested and search for a replacement from a junkyard in my spare time.
Maybe getting the fuel injection clamps would be the way to go. It's just that I want a permanent repair. It seems that on my previous truck I had to replace the small rubber hose up front every few years.
As for the salvage yard, I don't visit them all that often. I will start looking though.
Classic Tube does make nice lines. My friend of mine and I have used them for a few vintage car projects. I may contact them.
