I recently bought a 95 Bronco with the 302/E4OD combo. It has about 97k on the odo. I crawled under it to do my first oil change on it and noticed that the trans cooler lines were weeping at the place where they run horizontally below the radiator. I think they are clipped to a cross member, but I can't remember for sure. They are leaking out of the ends of a rubber tubing that has hose clamps at either end to join with the steel tubing runs towards the transmission and up to the radiator. I thought that the lines should be one piece of stainless for each run, supply and return. I have seen this kind of hose used before, but I can't remember what it is really for. It has a helical outer skin like a paper towel roll and is about 1/2" accross.
My question is whether one can patch the cooler lines in some way or do I need to replace them? I know that there are prebent lines available, but would I be better bending them myself or getting them out of the bone yard if possible?
That rubber piece is splicing your lines back together because the previous owner of the truck has brought the truck in for a tranny flush at a quick lube place. That is how they flush the tranny out. I know this because I have worked for that type of place before. They do that rather than find the correct fitting that fits the ends of the lines. It is simplier and faster. All I can say is make sure the clamps are tight,if they continue to leak replace the hose and clamps. If that doesn't stop it you are going to have to replace the lines. Alot of the time though they overtighten the clamps and split the hose too. good luck bud

Well I guess that makes me feel a little better. What kind of hose is recommended for this repair? Is there a particular fluid compatibility and pressure rating that I should look for?
Any rubber hose would work. I would use rubber fuel line hose because its thicker and more durable than standard hose. The E40D tranny takes mercon 3. Do not put Meron 5 in it. The local auto parts store should be able to direct you too. i would also double clamp it on both ends of the splice for safety reasons incase something happens.
