C5 cooler line leaking...

Hi guys, just picked up an old truck as a project and need a little help with a trans leak...

C5 trans, spewing oil from one of the trans cooler lines. The leaky line has about a foot long section of hose spliced in(with hose clamps) right where it runs past the cat shield. It definitely doesn't look "stock" and I can't imagine why you would want a rubber hose near hot exhaust....? I pulled up the pre bent lines on LMC and by looking at the pic, the piece of hose may be normal. In the pic, where the lines step up toward the trans connector, the black sections look like they may be rubber(or flexible).

Does anyone know if there should be a small section of hose or should the lines be hard lines all the way through?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm thinking hard line all the way.

Cooler lines are hard lines all the way from transmission to cooler. Only the newer cars started using crimped rubber lines at some point in the hardline to allow installation and removal.

Ok, thanks. That was my first instinct. Is bending new lines pretty straight forward? I assume I can get pre flanged straight lines and bend them to fit? 5/16" ?

You can try to bend them but there is one problem, if you try to bend it the factory routing it will not be long enough. That's what we did on a '82 we put a 5.0 Coyote in, we have a union coupler under the center line of the radiator.

I replaced the lines on my "84 C6 with preflanged straight lines hand bent to duplicate factory. I think one of the lines does have a union in it.

Cant say on a 84, but my 82 is a solid hardline from transmission to radiator. Might have changed it afterwards though, found out apparently from airbag it that in 82 there were two different sized ball joints used on a '82 F150. So who knows.

On a 65 Pontiac that I had a few years ago, I had transmission lines made up from hydraulic hose. They were a bit pricy at about $75.00 each, but I was able to route them effortlessly.
