Its two factors...first, the SoundScreen 'technology' basically consists of two thinner pieces of glass, with a clear vinyl layer laminated in between to act as a sound and vibration dampener. It cuts down on wind noise and also cuts down on durability.
Second factor is that big CAFE push to keep losing weight on vehicles. Even if the windshield is just the solid piece and not a soundscreen type, they make 'em thinner than they used to to shave a few more pounds off of the weight of the vehicle.
All windshields are two pieces of glass with a vinyl layer in between.
I had my windshield replaced on my wife's car a while back. Safelite used a Chinese windshield. I noticed a weird distortion in the glass that made telephone poles look bent as I went down the road. It was slight but it bugged me. I called and they replaced it. This happened four times before Safelite finally agreed to install factory glass, which solved the problem. The guy that installed it said that Safelite saves so much money by using Chinese windshields that they are willing to absorb the loss if someone complains. It's a total loss for them as the glass is broken when removed. He said that many of them have low spots in them that the wiper blades won't clean and this is a very common problem. One would think that the lane departure and collision avoidance camera could be compromised by this cheap glass.
Parenthetically, while reading the owners manual I noticed that Ford has a warning that we should NEVER turn on the windshield wipers without it being wet as light dirt could scratch it. I know this is commonsensical, however, I've never seen a owners manual with this warning before.
Truck finally arrived at the dealer last night and low and behold, while doing the PDI, found the windshield cracked.... I haven't even seen it yet. I told them no China glass. OEM only.
