This is is completely not the case. You can go out for a run and leave your fob in the truck. There is a proximity sensor on the door handles and part of that proximity is not behind the door. You can leave the fob in the vehicle and then use the keypad just like before.

As for the BLIS, I completely agree. I have it but never use it. With the mirrors as great as they are, it is not needed.

In addition to still being able to easily use the code pad to get in with the smart key, Ford has made provisions to start the truck even with a dead keyfob. You can enter the truck with the code, or simply use the emergency key hidden in the fob shell to open the driver's door lock.

Once inside, if your fob is dead, Ford has a "special place" where you place the fob - below the cupholder area on the center console, which can "read" the transponder without it actually transmitting when you press the engine Start button. The truck will still start.

Sorry never knew this. Every time I tried to leave my fob in the F150 it would always unlock. Didn't know about using those particular codes on the keypad. And if I left it running and took the fob with me it would blow the horn and unlock. I would think it would be easier to steal if you had keyless start and left the fob in the vehicle vs leaving the key. Even if you hid it well If someone knew or had a way to find out or bypass the code they wouldn't even have to search for a key to start it. Just hop in and drive away since the fob is in the vehicle. With a key they would have to try and find it first.

The Ford code pad has been around for several decades now, and the functions haven't changed. After punching in the unlock code, hitting the 3/4 key unlocks all doors (if they aren't set to do that anyway). On the truck, hitting the 5/6 key opens the tailgate (if you have the electric release tailgate). Pressing 7/8 and 9/0 has always locked the vehicle and armed the alarm.

As for leaving the fob inside, it is no easier to steal. Once the vehicle has been locked with the code pad, even with the key inside the vehicle, the engine will not start unless the correct unlock code is entered first or the second key fob is used. So even if you leave your fob in plain sight in the vehicle and someone smashes a window, the engine will still not start. Pretty cool, eh?

yes. I knew about the 3/4 but never knew about the other codes and what they did. Now I do thanks

So I ordered my new truck with all available a la carte Lariat Ultimate components but without the Lariat Ultimate pkg because I wanted a key. I wanted a key because I'm concerned that the button or fob may fail and I wouldn't have a way to crank the vehicle. Plus I'm a runner and don't like running with a key so a lot of times with my truck before the last I would lock my key in the truck and use the keypad to get in. It was nearly impossible to do this with the keyless start.

Other things I missed out on and am somewhat regretful about are heated steering wheel (never thought I would like or use this, and kinda feel like a wuss because I liked it, but I did use it quite a bit in my last truck). The auto high/low beams were also nice. There are other components of the Lariat Ultimate Package, but I don't miss them for example the ambient lighting.

Would really like to have the quad beam headlights as well and the BLIS, but just couldn't bring myself to pay $1080 just for lights. Also, the $570 for the BLIS was hard to justify especially since I now have bigger mirrors and can see the blind spots. The BLIS system on my F150 was essentially useless because the little dot in the upper corner of the light was essentially invisible and the mirrors were small. The light or notification should be larger. I figured with the Super Duty and the larger mirrors I didn't need it. One part of the BLIS I do miss is the cross-traffic alert. That was especially nice when backing out of a parking space and other vehicles were coming from the sides and I couldn't see them.

In the end I guess I can and must walk away knowing that the truck I would have ordered if money was no object would have stickered for just over $72K and the one I ordered and purchased stickered for just under $68K.
Is color changing ambient lighting not part of the lariat? I ordered the lariat value package, and thought I would have the ambient lighting...

Ambient Lighting requires the Lariat Ultimate package.

The Lariat Value package gives you heated / cooled front seats, power adjustable pedals, memory for the driver's seat, pedals, and outside mirrors, power telescoping and folding mirrors, LED box lighting and 3rd brake lamp, and remote engine starter.

Most dealers seem to push the Lariat Value package more than the Ultimate, perhaps because it is significantly cheaper.

Ambient lighting isn't all that special. Had it in my 150 and don't miss it in the 250.

Here's how I spec'd my 2017 Lariat CCSB 4x4
-diesel
-3.55 locker
-carpet delete
-chrome pkg
-FX4
-navigation
-rapid heat
-twin panel moonroof
-roof lights
-chrome PVD 20" wheels
-upfitters
-garage door opener
-tailgate step
-ultimate trailer tow camera
-heated rear seat
-lariat value pkg

In doing this instead of the Lariat Ultimate Package, I didn't get or got instead the following
-Standard interior lighting vs Ambient Lighting where you have additional lighting in the foot well, arm rests, under seats, console(s) etc. of your color choice between the main primary colors red, blue, purple, yellow, green etc.
-Traditional light and wiper controls instead of Automatic High Beam with Rain-Sensing Windshield Wipers
-Traditional key instead of Intelligent Access with Push-button Start (PEPS)
-I got manual tilt/telescoping wheel without heat instead of Power Telescoping/Tilt Steering Wheel/Column with heat, memory
-Taligate that locks and unlocks with the doors and manual release instead of Remote Tailgate Release

MSRP difference of $67,720 instead of $69,535. Should I have spent the extra ~ $2K for these other things instead? Sometimes I think so and sometimes I don't. I would like to have the auto high/low beams they were nice on the 150, but if I had never had them I probably wouldn't miss them. Same goes for heated steering wheel. The power part of the steering wheel I don't care about or miss. Remote tailgate release I always thought may result in damage to the tailgate by accidentally hitting the button when you didn't mean to and it dropping on something. Rain sensing wipers were pretty useless unless they've improved them. Too much lag time in sensing and responding to rain volume. I ended up having to control them manually anyway.

You have a very nicely spec'd truck. Keep in mind some of the things you manually ordered would have been included in the Ultimate package, such as the navigation, moonroof, and tailgate step. Not sure if you factored that into the price difference or not.

One thing that adds a small amount of value to the Lariat Ultimate pack is that the Sirius Travel Link is prepaid for 5 years, not 6 months. Some people find it useful; others don't use it.

I like the ambient lighting - not the fact that you can change colors, but just makes the truck feel a tad more upscale. A lot of European higher-end cars were doing this starting in the late 1990's to early 2000's. Not changeable colors, but just the same color as the dashboard lighting, and very subtle. The fact that the ambient lighting changes to red automatically when you open a door is cool.

The power steering column is silly, but the heated steering wheel is very, very nice. One of my favorite features overall...heats quickly and gets quite warm. Of course, RAM lets you have a heated steering wheel on a truck with cloth seats, but Ford makes you pay for it.

The auto high beams work very well. Like you say, the rain-sensing wipers still need work. It's like there is a "delay" before it figures out it needs to slow down or speed up. I often end up manually operating as well.

The remote tailgate seems like a party trick to me - I have no use for it, and I hate how slow the tailgate drops. I've also worried about accidental damage.

The push to start and proximity access is actually pretty nice. Keep the key in your pocket the whole time. But strong dislikes include the forced wait for glow plugs, even when they aren't necessary...and the double horn honk if you step out with the fob in your pocket. That can be remedied...

That's truck to truck and I thought about it a lot. MSRP considered for everything. Almost switched to the Lariat Ultimate Pkg several times. The way I spec'd mine, the only things missing are what I stated above. I have everything else that is in Lariat Ultimate pkg and considered all pricing. What it boiled down to when I did it and I kept going back and forth then and still now was, was it worth up to $2K for ambient lighting, auto high beam/rain sense wipers, power tailgate release, power heated steering wheel and PEPS.......eh, I still don't know, but like I said if I hadn't had all those things before I probably wouldn't think twice about it. If Ford would have offered auto high beams, and a heated steering wheel as stand alone options I would have sprung for that too, but they don't The other stuff I could really care less about. So I came back to is it worth that much to me for those 2 options. I ultimately decided no. I think my favorite thing so far is no carpet and it rides so much better than the last gen.

I followed the development of this 2017 Super Duty from the early days back in 2015 when tidbits were just starting to come out. Once I found out about the LED headlights, those were a must have for me. Unfortunately, I learned Lariat Ultimate was a requirement to have those, along with BLIS.

My ideal truck was an XLT with heated power seats, a moonroof, the LED headlights, Nav system, backup cam, diesel engine, 4x4, bed liner, tailgate step, remote start, and better audio system. The XLT fulfilled a lot of these requirements, but I was set on the lights.

I hear ya......one thing. Any time you order the navigation system regardless of whether it's a stand alone option or part of the LUP, it includes the 5 year subscription to Sirius XM Traffic and Travel Link so no added value there. The 6 month is only for the standard system in a Lariat. When I did a lot of interstate driving to work I found it useful to help avoid traffic jams, road closures, and accidents and to re-route me around them.

No kidding...I always thought the Ultimate gave you the 5-year Travel Link. Well, good to know.

F2502011....this is not so with the 2017. You can leave the truck running...get out and shut the door. Yes...the horn will honk twice. Key here is to hold the fob way out with your other hand....away from the handle. Lock your truck with the external key pad and it will lock and stay locked with the truck running. If you try and do it with the fob too close...it will keep unlocking...lol. Just takes one time to figure it out. If you can't hold the fob far enough away....just set it on the ground for a sec about 6 feet away..go back over and lock the truck. It will stay locked...and running until you walk back up.

I heard some where you could set the truck so it will not allow you to drive away without the key present in the truck. Can anyone comment on how this works or how to setup?

My pet peave is being able to drive a push button start car away without the key in the vehicle once started. Yes safety blah blah I would rather the thing just not allow you to drive it until you come back.
