Does anyone have any suggestions if I were going to switch out my standard tranny and replace with an auto? 87 F150 4x4. Which automatic would work for best gas mileage? Would I have to get it from another 4x4 because of the transfer case? Would it be better to also find a auto steering column than to try and add linkage, etc to mine? My radiator is set up for the lines already. Has anyone done this conversion? There are so many automatics to choose, it's confusing. Or is it even worth it? Any advice appreciated
The standard tranny will give you a couple extra MPG over the auto simply because an auto slips and in a stick, you can pick whatever gear you want to be in. Don't have any experience with swapping those trannys.
I wanted an automatic because I'm in alot of stop and go traffic on a daily basis and the auto would be nice to have. It's also about time for another clutch and I figured if it was worth doing, now would be a good opportunity to try. Sounds like a nightmare unless I had a complete donor truck right next to mine swapping out parts.
Well if your gonna swap to an automatic, the 4R70W has the tallest OD gear, which will get the best mileage, otherwise the E40d would win my vote.
But like mentioned above the M5OD light duty 5-speed will get the best overall. I would recommend sticking with it, if all you do is comutting and very minor work.
