I have a 2002 F150 XLT with a 4.6 liter V8 engine. I am flushing and installing new coolant. My manual says the engine holds approx. 20 qts. of coolant. My question is how much does the engine block itself hold. I plan to only drain the radiator and flush a couple of times to make sure there is only fresh water left in the block, but how much water is that? I need to know so I know what mixture of coolant to add back to the radiator. Thank you for any response.
If you fill the system, and run the motor several times you should pretty much have diluted the antifreeze left in the system to a low level in your favor.
Fill the system slowly to below the tank level. Start the motor and let it mix with what is left from the original flush and drain.
Fill more to the point you can check with a Hydrometer.
Depending on what your reading is, you will complete the fill and get the air out of the system at the same time.
Other wise to drain the block, plugs would have to be removed on the sides.
Your over thinking this to some degree because the block does not hold all that much compared to the radiator, hoses plus the heater core and hoses.
.
If after all is done the check shows protection is not low enough, drain some out and refill with straight antifreeze to get what you want.
Good luck.
20 quarts of a 50-50 mix.......... so I put in 2.5 gallons of antifreeze FIRST, then add distilled water as needed. Normally there is 1.5 to 2 gallons in the block.
