1) drain the radiator (at petcock) and remove block drain fittings (One is behind the starter and the other one is the smaller of the two next to rear of the oil filter flange)
2) reinstall block drain fittings and close petcock,
3) fill with clean water and radiator flush,
4) run to normal temperatore with heater control set to the hottest setting (all the way clockwise),
5) repeat step #1.
6) refill with distilled water,
7) run to normal temperature,
8) repeat step #1
9) close petcock and reinstall block drains
Now you have a few choices...
A. Install 203 t-stat, new billet thermstat housing (the stamped one on the truck is junck) and coolant filter system (bob riley's got these) then/or
B. just install long-life coolant (Rotella ELC is good for 300K miles then with the additionof additive package ypou can go another 300K miles!!!) or
C. just install regular anti-freeze with proper dose of SCA additive.
Any water added to the anti-freeze should be distilled water. I would definitely flush the system.
If I remember correctly you need 8 gallons of antifreeze and 8 gallons of distilled water...have fun!
I'd call a few independent garages...they might have a tank for storing until it is recycled...maybe a six pack of adult berverages could get them to take it off you hands.
Where is the coolant filter located ? And where is the stock thermostat that was mentioned earlier ?...the one u were saying to replace with the 203 t stat from bob rileys...thanks in advance
Coolant filter is an after-market add on. It's normally mounted to the driver-side top radiator bracket. I'm probably going to add one after I get done with my next round of mods. 'stat is under the flange on the block where the top radiator hose goes.
I went to my local international dealer a few months back when I was purchasing a spare CPS and asked them about changing my coolant and they told me there was a stock coolant filter I had to change also...I have a 2K excursion with the 7.3... so basically the internation guy that told me that doesn't know his a$$ from his elbow ?
I don't think Ford used coolant filters on our trucks. International probably does, so I wouldn't say he doesn't know is stuff. It's a good mod, though -- extends that water pump life by quite a bit...
To get rid of old anti-freeze contact some car dealers or larger repair shops. They catch the old anti-freeze that they drain out of engines, filter it and reuse it to top off cars that they are servicing. I don't know if they add any additives but they do check to be sure of the freeze point and add fresh anti-freeze to bring it up to, or down to, spec.
