Checking codes on my '97 F-250HD today (460, E4OD) and it has a KOEO code of 626 which I found to mean "coast clutch solenoid failure, E4OD".
Trying to look up what a coast clutch solenoid is / does I found that when it fails there will be no compression braking in gears 1, 2 and 3. I couldn't tell if I have compression braking in 3rd (wasn't going fast enough to notice if I did), but I definitely have it in 1st and 2nd.
Can anyone help me with what this code really means, and what is entailed in correcting it?
Also I tried out the compression braking in 3rd at higher speeds. There's not much there anyway, but I can't really feel anything when I coast at 55 mph in neutral ad then shift into gear with overdrive locked out. I can imagine that I feel something when I do that without locking out OD, so I'm thinking it has more compression braking in 4th than it does in 3rd, indicating that something is wrong.

The coast clutch solenoid is only used to provide engine braking in Drive with O/D locked out. It's likely your harness is damaged at the solenoid pack connector on the transmission.
Busy and cold week (5 deg at noon today) so I haven't crawled under the truck to look for any damaged wires yet. Hopefully on Saturday.
In the meantime, is there any problem with driving it without the coast solenoid? I am driving the truck regularly and I really can't tell anything is different in normal usage. It doesn't seem like I'm likely to cause any more damage continuing to use the truck, but is it really safe?
If you don't turn the OD OFF the coast clutch solenoid will never be activated and there will be absolutely no difference in the way the trans operates. If you do turn off OD, you won't have engine braking. You won't hurt anything either way.
Thanks for that thread. I probably won't be doing any work on it now. It's way too cold here to be doing wiring. And I'm not really having any problems anyway, no flashing lights, no symptoms, just found the code. But at least now I know what to look for when it warms up!
