This isn't a loaded question, I know there is unlimited information online, but it gets real confusing.
I just finished dropping the oil pan on the F1 , I installed a new Melling oil pump, Pickup, and a Felpro one piece gasket. Along with all that, I tidied up a few other things i noticed needing attention and I made a mental note of additional things i'll do down the road.
I was curios about the different claims of filter quality. I work at a shop where we do oil changes so I had the opportunity to cut filters open and inspect them. I found FoMOCo,NAPA and Wix to be well made. Fram is the worst I have personally seen. Others I have not seen inside of so can't say. As a rule if it's a $4.00 filter there is a reason, buy a good one these engines are getting too expensive to rebuild.

When you say FoMoCo, are you referring to the Motorcraft FL-1A ?
It really depends on the filter number you're using. No one manufacturer makes all of their own filters these days, it just isn't economical to do so. The common numbers are more likely to be made per manufacturer buuuutttttt... not even all of them cover what you would think they would. Betting on a filter to always be a quality part based on manufacturer is a crapshoot - I've seen them change suppliers, back and forth, I suppose due to who's going to give them the best price.
This is one of the big reasons I find it difficult to do extended oil change intervals. Yeah, I believe the oil (semi and full synthetics) can handle it but good filters (oil and air) are also an important part of the equation. Likewise, I would never consider extended oil changes on a carbureted and/or non-electronic ignition engine. Since WalMart has been selling Mobil 1 for about $1 more than regular oil there's little reason to not just change it at 3-5K intervals.

Reason: add'l info
I have cut open a number of filters to see for myself what is inside and how it worked...or didn't work. I have never had one fail but I have listened to a lot of rhetoric about filters and whose are good and whose are junk. Personally I like Wix. Even Saylor-Beall used a Wix filter on the S-B compressor I own.

That would be the one. In general the filters I mentioned just had better internals. Drain back valves were retained in position, not just laying there, they had springs for relief valves not a pressed piece of metal and most importantly the filter material was fastened into metal end plates not a piece of cardboard.
You can really see the quality Wix puts into their filters on the cartridges for the bypass filters on flatties. I use the NAPA Gold which is made by Wix.
I agree that NAPA and WIX are some of the best out there, I just have a problem when I looking at them, I see that the brand name or logo is just a sticker applied to the painted surface of the filter. I always feel that its just another generic filter that went down some assembly line only to receive its branding prior to being boxed. I guess Im just reminiscent of the old days when that information was painted on the filter.
