oil filter questions
The federated house brand oil filter I saw recently said "Hastings" on the side of it. I also understand Wix makes the Napa brand. I'm just wonering if there is a filter out there "better" than the Purolator.
BTW, I use the standard filter and not the pureone. I have some worries that the filters with the very small micron filtration capabilities will bypass more oil than a standard filter. No reason for that just a personal thought. Is that the case? It seems that those filters would take longer to filter the oil and bypass a lot of unfiltered oil in the process.

I read the oil filter study done a few years ago, the one that slams Fram oil filters so badly. One of the criteria that was measured was the total surface area of filter media in the filter. So here's my point; if the filter media is of a smaller micron size and therefor more restrictive to oil flow, that can be compensated for by increasing the total filtering area.
Amoung the other shortcomings of the Fram filter was a relatively smaller filter area. The Purolator, Wix and other quality filters had a good size filtering area.
A copy of the web page that compares oil filters can be found at [link:www.dorianyeager.com/oilfilterstudy1.html|this web site]. I've read through it a few times. I love this sort of DIY research.
Best regards,
I've been using Purolator for at least ten years ( I can't remember past that). I've had no problem. My 300 6 cylinder has 180,000+ miles on it and is still going strong. Unless you're into racing, I believe most filters are pretty much the same. Now you know - BUBBA
