Oil filter question?

I've done the research and read enough posts to feel enlightened about which oil I want to use. On other posts I've seen other oil filters mentioned. Some were quite a bit less expensive than the Ford 1995 filter I get for 10-11 dollars.

Is there a certification that Ford requires to approve a given filter like they do for Oil? How does the quality of the lower price filters stack up? I know I'll get allot of varied and probably differing opinions but I think they are all great!

Thanks - Dan Ward

Good oil filter information here;

I think it has been by far the most enlightening filter information that I have come accross. I did know that filters are not equal. I also know that Ford, with Harley and Mopar find some cheap product label it with their name and jack up the price.

That oil filter "study" has been around the block so much I think it needs a penecillin shot

Simply cutting a filter open and looking at the contents has almost nothing to do with how it actually performs in your truck. Filter companies test and rate their products based upon various efficiency tests - that's where you can actually attempt to separate fact from fiction. Of course, they all focus on the test/method that makes their product look the best, which makes an objective analysis that much more difficult.

Are some more cheaply made? I'd say that is accurate, but will the "better" filters actually do anything for you if you change your filter at the recommended interval? I say no.

Dan - every filter (or any other aftermarket part) sold for a particular automotive application is tested against, and must meet or exceed, OEM requirements.

IMO for three bucks, it'd be pretty hard to get a better deal than the Motorcraft filters at Sears.

Buy a good filter. A $40K truck deserves a $14 Wix filter. I get so sick of hearing "I got a 2002 F-350 Powerstroke and I want the cheapest filter I can get". What a joke.

The 1995 Motorcraft filter at Walmart is 9.95 - is the Motorcraft filter at sears the same thing? Where do you get a Wix filter?

The Sears filters are Purolator, but Purolator makes MC filters.

Personally, I think the joke is on anyone that actually thinks cost has anything to do with the quality and performance of a product. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and waste your money. I'd rather put the savings into something my truck will actually benefit from.

Also, to edit my previous post, I meant a Purolator filter not a Motorcraft. My bad...

Absolutely.

The filter that Sears sells for $2.99 is the exact same filter that Pep Boys sells for $11.99.

The regular price for STP filters at AZ is $11.99 or $12.99 each. But with a coupoin, all STP filters are 2 for $5.

So, if I buy the Purolator at Pep Boys, or I buy the STP at AZ when it is not on sale, why does the high price make them better filters?

The reality is that Sears and AZ are stupid, stupid, stupid and sell their PSD filters way too cheap. Some Sears have figured this out and either stopped stocking Purolator PSD filters, or raised the price to $7.99. Some AZ managers refused to honor the coupon.

So, you get what you pay for is a load of crap.

As far as what oil filter to use...I have 3 Frantz bypass filters on my PSD... Engine, Fuel, Transmission.. My engine oil and transmission fluid stay polished clean 100% of the time.. I don't need to change my oil! The diesel fuel is also free of any contaminates and moisture.. I run pure diesel fuel 100% of the time and the engine runs much better too.

Check out these sites for more information on T P bypass filtration:

Fuel Filter and Transmission change

I am a new truck owner and have two questions that I hope someone can answer:

1. Do I need to take my truck to a shop to have the
fuel filter changed or is it something I can easily
do myself?

2. Same question for transmission change in my
2001 F550 diesel. Is it just a matter of draining
the fluid and replacing it with new fluid.

thanks,

I think that there will never be a true answer to the "best" oil filter... But I will add my input on oil filters also.. For me and my dad's company we use Carquest Filters for everything.. Fuel, Oil etc.. We have these filter on out Mack Trucks, Caterpillar dozers, Ford Tractor, Cat 3208 diesel motors.. and all of our gas motors.. we also use the Carquest filters for hydraulic systems too.. We have been using these filters along w/ the Carquest 15W-40 Oil (Basically Valvoline just w/. Carquest Name on it) and we have noo complainits on anything.. Since we run the dawg out of our equipment everyday I can't complain on it.. hope this helps

My Sears in Montana just raised the price from $2.99 to $12.99 for the PSD filter. If yours hasn't done so yet, buy all you need while you can get them cheap. I bought 3 last time and should have bought 30 or 40. Now I've got to find another source.

One word------Fleetguard--------the filter of choice for most major trucking companys according to the Driving Force Magazine which is a truckers magazine found at any truck stops. Filter can be bought at any truck stop or trucking parts store for the powerstroke, part number LF3630, cost about 12 bucks an they rrrrrrrr good, or you can go spend a mere 2.99 for a craftsman filter from the Roebuck store. Personally I'll spend the extra 9 dollars. who ever said spending more does not mean better, well over the years I have learned the hard way, you get what you pay for. You do pay more for better quality, bottom line. Later
