I had it on my XL work truck. To get it to appear you press the button on the shift. If you select a gear let's say #5 while in Drive it will shift through the gears and not go higher than (the one selected) 5th gear. Then if you put the gear shift in M Manual you press the (arrows) buttons on the shift to make it shift gears similar to a standard transmission. Just because I figure this is the next question.

Thank you, but I'm familiar w/ how it works because I have it in my current '14 F150, and love it. I find myself constantly playing w/ it. I wish my last 6.0 F350 had it!
On my Lariat the gears are displayed on the left inside this section in red. I found that pressing the +- button on the shifter once turned this on and its defaulted to on ever since on every startup which is nice that I don't have to manually turn it on every time.
The 4.2" instrument cluster screen is standard equipment for XLT, the 8" comes with the XLT premium package.
XLT needs premium pack and driver assistance package (auto high beams, auto wipers, etc) in order to get the 8" display. Premium alone only has the 4.2" display.
The 8" display, like coolidge's example, shows the gears on the left in the separate area of the screen. When in "Manual" mode, a small "M" appears next to the selected gear and all other gears disappear.
This is a great feature for Ford. GM does not offer it, and RAM's is not as nice.
The 8" screen is a nice setup, but I don't think I can swallow the prem pack and the driver assistance pack just to get it. Too many options I don’t want.

The display is nice, but the 4.2" display basically does almost everything the 8" display does.

Yes I have the XLT Premium package without the driver assistance package and I have the 4.2" display.
