I have to say I needed some transmission parts and someone, I don't remember who suggested Chucks Trucks, LLC. Chuck found my parts and was totally awesome!
I requested a new cluster gear, 2nd speed syncro, 3rd speed gear, and idler/reverse gear. Chuck found everything.
However, I have a question maybe someone on the Forum can help me. The teeth on the cluster gear I received, are the opposite from my input shaft, so my input shaft doesn't mesh with the cluster gear. My 2nd gear also doesn't mesh with the cluster gear. Why would the teeth be the opposite?
Anyway, I've contacted Chuck and asked for a new input shaft and a new 2nd Gear.
Fordman, No, I don't believe I'm putting it together backwards. The large gear of the cluster gear is toward the front and the input shaft doesn't not mesh. I then looked at the old cluster gear, which the input shaft does mesh with, and the teeth are opposite. The second gear also does not mesh with the cluster gear and I never took that apart. So I don't think its put together backwards.
I have been doing my best to research this and here is what I (currently and to the best of my abilities) know to be "true fact":
Two versions of the T98 exist. They have different gear pitches (left hand vs right hand) on all but the spur gears. The standard rebuild parts (bearings and synchro blocking rings) will interchange. The helical gears will not. If you stand the cluster gear on the big end and look at the teeth, a T98 has teeth that pitch up and to the right. A T98A cluster gear's teeth pitch up and to the left.
I have read that they changed in 1955. Albatross has its original T98. It is a 1955 vehicle, so, perhaps there is some grey area there. As if that wasn't enough, the guts of a T18 will fit in the T98 case. As well, there was a period wherein a T18 came with the casting of a T98 shifter housing (cover) from the factory. It even had T98 cast into it.
Another interesting side note: there was a period when the T18's cover had a reverse light switch and would fit on a T98. I understand that the T18 cover then changed to where this was no longer possible around 1979.

I can corroborate partially what Horvaths says - I too recall seeing a T98A, I found most all the tech info, but I never found a user who put it in a 1/2 ton truck sooooo the T98 is in the salmon colored chart and the T98A is in the blue chart (2nd one).
brain75 and Horvaths - Just heard from Chuck of Chuck's Trucks. He told me Ford changed the T98 because the earlier model would slip out of 2nd when the gears became worn so they reversed the pitch. What they found was the newer T98's would slip out of gear in any gear when under load after the gears became worn.
Its kind of a double-edged sword - I'm glad I'm not going crazy but hate to hear the trannie may worse.
I imagine that their testing was far more abusive than anything that you or I would put these trucks through. My T98 still holds second quite securely. It had something over 85k miles but there is widespread micro-pitting from sitting for years. I'm putting it back together and running it.
I rebuilt it because it made noise in neutral. It turns out that the tiny grit from the surface pitting/corrosion took out the cluster shaft's front thrust washer bearing surface.
I agree - my F350 was used and abused by the Forest Service and later by a Commercial Forestry Service. This old rig will be lucky to be driven a couple of times a year and most likely in the 4th of July Parade, LOL. Chuck at Chuck's Trucks is great! I also needed a new parking brake drum and he gave me some ideas on that topic too.
