I have a 1993 7.3idi non turbo crew cab long wheel base with 180k miles on it. I drove the truck through town the other day and it died on me. Cranked on it for a couple of minutes and it fired back up. Right before it died it felt like it wasn't getting any fuel. So I had the fuel filter changed and the oil changed. Just got it back drive it about 15 miles and it started surging while I was driving. It would speed up on its own and bog down on its own without me changing the acceleration. Then I went to go up a hill and it died on me. I cranked on it for a few minutes and boom! Started up idled fine as always. Took off back up hill and made it about 15 feet and it died again. Idles fine but will not go. Tanks are both full of diesel and as I said fuel filter was just changed. Any ideas?
That is a good sign of air infiltration. Does it do this on both tanks? Is there any fuel near the return lines? There are many places air can be sucked in...
Does it on both tanks not sure about fuel near the return lines, it's on the back of a tow truck now headed to a shop. Sat and idled for almost an hour with intermittent shaking.
Check the fuel line below the transfer pump; passenger side of engine right near the front. It's a loop of rubber hose from the fuel pump on the engine to the hard line on the frame rail.
Probably shot by now and leaking /lots/ of air in.
