Question Adapting electric fuel pump

I have been having problems with my truck. It had been running fine. It idled fine also. Then one day, just driving along it died and would not refire. I replaced the lift pump after doing a volume test. During the test drive, it ran fine for 15 miles. The next time that I went to use the truck, it cranked and ran fine for about 3 miles and died going down the road. I managed to get it refired, but it idled roughly. I bled the air at the Schraeder and it cleared up. It took two more "die and bleeds" to get it back home 3 miles.

At this point, I removed the water separator and bypassed it at the frame rails (cut the hard lines and inserted a piece of tubing). During my test drive today, it died again and would not refire. My Dad has been telling me to ditch the lift pump and put an electric pump on there. Does that sound like the way to go? Also, how have you guys adapted the nylon fuel lines to the pump?

CenturianDually,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

I would normally say it was the return line hoses and O rings, but that is usually only during starting. Since you are having trouble while driving I have a few more possibilities.

How much fuel is in the tank?
The early model trucks had fuel pickup tube issues, they cracked and let air enter the fuel system. This usually happened at 1/2 tank or less.

Also do a careful inspection of the fuel lines, where they are steel lines they tend to rust through under the clamps that anchor them to the frame.

Your problem is somewhere between the lift pump and the tank since it is sucking in air while running.
The only other possibility I could think of would be a blocked fuel filter.

You can put a rubber fuel line over the nylon line and use a couple hose clamps to secure it.

Tanks are nearly full. I have tried both tanks with the same result.

I forgot to add that I replaced the standard filter with the Racor unit with the water separator on the bottom from Dieselman. So the filter is brand new.

I thought of clamping over the tubing, but I wasn't sure if the nylon would be strong enough to handle the clamping load without leaking.

Thanks for the info.

Check the rubber hose on the lift pump, replace it, mine required a large loop so as not to crimp it flat which will restrict fuel flow. You may also have a bad connection at the hose or "if" you removed it the line going up to the fuel filter header. There is a rubber squash seal under the cap nut which seals against fitting. Seals are available at most diesel shops.......3/8ID
