Do all Fe series engines have a Hex shape drive on Distributor for the oil pump? I am about to change my distributor with a new one and was told that there is a Hex Drive on the end of the distributor that meshes with the oil pump. And to watch out cuz it may fall out when removing old distributor. What do I do if it falls out when I bring it out a the engine? And more specific loose it back in the dist hole? Have never done this on one of these engines and want some input
The FE oil pump drive shaft should have a spring steel collar around it that is **supposed** to prevent it from being lifted out of the oil pump upon distributor removal. It's possible that this collar isn't there at all or isn't in the correct position and it will come out with the distributor.
It can be successfully replaced with an oil pump priming tool or an old distributor with the cam gear removed. Use some heavy grease to keep it stuck to the tool as you guide it back into its proper location. These same tools can be used to align the pump shaft to the distributor shaft so that #1 is pointing in the right direction when you replace it.
