I have a 1973 F-250 with a 390 4 speed. When the engine was First rebuilt everything was fine but now the clutch is chattering when take-in off especially when warmed up. I removed the tin shield over the flywheel and did not see any oil on the clutch or surfaces. Notice a very slight film of oil on the Trans side and Engine side is Dry. What would make the clutch Chatter?
Any oil on the surface of the flywheel, pressure plate or clutch disc itself would cause it to chatter. Broken springs on the clutch disc itself would as well. The noise could be the throw out bearing possibly but its hard to diagnose sounds over the web. If there is oil on those surfaces you can try using some brake cleaner to clean the oil off. It will not hurt the clutch disc. Do this only when the engine is off. Also helps to have someone push in on the clutch while spraying inside the bell housing. Wear eye protection! It burns something fierce when it gets in your eyes.
When I get a chance I will remove the Bell housing shield and Do that with brake cleaner and check bell housing bolts while I am at it! Will Let cha know! Thank you!
Did you resurface the flywheel when it was all apart? Hot spots on flywheel will cause chatter, new clutch I presume???
I don't know the shop that done the engine was supposed to and replace the clutch resurface the flywheel and replace the transmission Input shaft seal. And i question if any of that actually got done?
The clutch does it when releasing it, Not so much a chatter noise but shudder when released. i was told it could be oil contamination so I blocked the clutch peddal down and sprayed brake cleaner on it to wash away contamination. It did not appear to be bad but after I sprayed it was good but it came back again but not as bad
