I've noticed what sounds like a boost leak in my 03, it really sounds like its coming from the firewall area but by looking at the up pipe the best I can it don't see any signs of an obvious leak.
I tightened up all my intercooler clamps some were surprisingly a little loose and I thought last night that was my issue but it was not.
It sounds like an intense amount of air being pushed out of something-thing is it wont do it all the time and sometimes it seems worse then others.....
Is is possible I have a tiny crack in my up pipe and it only leaks under a heavy boost situation?
Could it be possibly one of my intercooler boots has ripped slightly?
It's a ways away from where you describe, but pull your air cleaner. Under it is two rubber grommet mounts, and it rides on your cold side plastic intake. Over time, it wears a hole in that plastic up pipe and the sound can be deceiving.
If those are the original boots on the truck, you might have an issue with the boot right off the turbo hot side. Mine turned to mesh. Couldn't feel a tear in the boot, but, once I got it off I could see the boot looking like a mesh. Add boost to the boot and it would expand the mesh and leak. It also was on the back side of where I couldn't see. New boots from RiffRaff diesel solved it.
If you think you have a leak on the exhaust, you can put a piece of string on a rod and hold it up to the exhaust system and see if the string blows around.

X 2. I would almost put money on it, had I not spent all my money on Christmas already.
I had this EXACT issue not too long ago.
Here is the link to the threads for you to take a look at. Hope it helps.
This is the thread I started when I heard the problem:
Yes, I have the early 03 if I changed my Username as often as I changed truck Id have a new user name every couple months lol....
I think I am just going to order new intercooler pipes and boots with new clamps, it will clean up under the hood a little better, and hopefully fix the issue.....
If not I guess I will do the up pipe, ill just replace the entire thing, just trying to avoid pulling the turbo for now
