I have a 94 f250 4x4 460 automatic. I bought it out west so the body is very nice but it has 200K miles on it and the transmission just quit going forward. I am toying around with the idea of putting an FE in it. Has anyone been down this road before? I understand that I will need an FE C6. From what limited research I have done it seems that the married C6/transfer case combos were in the 1/2 ton trucks and the highboys had divorced units. would a short FE C6 bolt up to my existing transfer case? should I use a short C6 and a divorced transfer case then make driveshafts or find a married unit.
any insight and suggestions are appreciated
As cool as that thought sounds, I would say no, don't do it.
If you have the skills to do an FE/C6 swap, you have the skills to rebuild your E4OD. There are some swaps that shouldn't be done and this is one of them.
If you really want to do this you'll need a LOT more research. Check out the bump and dent forums for guys swapping FE engines for fuel injected 460s and it should give you some insight; they are completely different engines and nothing will match up. Then, if you want the FE to compare to the 460's performance you will need to spend $6-$8K on go-fast parts (been there, done that).
At the end of the day this is kind of like putting a flathead in a Taurus.
