Question to those who have built a roof rack
Did you make the standoffs all the same height, or did you make them different to follow rake of truck or get the rack level with ground?
Also, what clearance did you end up with between rack and roof?
Getting material and just starting mine.
I plan on using 1" sq tubing for base. 1" round for the upper rail and connect them with flat plate that has been drilled and use a dimple die for strength and weight savings.

Hey there tkmitchell. I custom build my roof rack a few years ago and posted a write up on it before also, here is the link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post15600692
but to answer your question directly, I did NOT follow the roof line, I did NOT make the standoffs the same height, it looks silly because the excursion roof line starts high and slopes downward pretty severely.
I used aluminum bars, and cut standoff squares, and then drilled holes. I used one square in the front, 2 in the middle and 4 in the rear. The article I posted last year shows 2 in the rear, but I have since changed that design and run 4 in the rear.
The total lift in the back is exactly 1.5" standoff, while the front and mid standoffs are 0.35" 0.70" respectively.
That gave it a nice clean line, while not being exactly level, it gave the ex the best overall "level" look.

I built a stainless yak rack for mine. It was a quicky and I just went along winging it as I went. I used two round bars, one slid inside the other for easy width adjustment (and storing of the bars when not in use).

Just little threaded plates slid into the roof tracks.
upper plate with bolts threw to sandwich the roof rail.

All stainless materials because I don't like rust.

Thanks Mike! I'll see if I can get some time tomorrow to get some better pics and measurements.
