I have an 04 Excursion with a 6.0PSD. I am currently experiencing a coolant leak, not very bad at the moment but I would like to fix it. The coolant is running down the back right side of the engine and I can see coolant pooling on the pan on top of the motor, specifically the right side. I can see some moisture on the front of the engine but it is below the top of the engine and I do not think this would be the cause since coolant won't flow up hill. I can't see or smell any coolant flowing when the engine is running but see it at idle and when parked. If anybody has a suggestion I would be grateful.
Hi Jeff, I had a similar problem a few years ago. In my case I still had the red hose that attaches to the EGR cooler installed. This hose was leaking and causing a coolant leak that usually dripped down by the starter. I too only noticed it after I had been parked for a bit. I replaced it with a new blue hose and problem solved.
I think I found the procedure for the the replacemet on this forum. Its pretty straight forward and i'm no mechanic. The part is about $45.00.
I deleted my egr and the egr delete hose is now leaking exactly as you describe 2 years later. It's a very minor leak so I'm waiting on some free time to fix.
Thanks for the information. My ultimate plan is to replace the oil cooler with the IPR system and in the process replace several gaskets to prevent future issues. What is really strange about this is the leak is not leaking today. The only difference was parking the beast facing up hill instead of downhill. No idea why this made a change but it did. I'm not completely sure how water would flow up the grade, down the back of the engine with the nose facing downhill but for some reason it does. Maybe one day soon I'll get the chance to replace the cooler lines under the turbo area.
If it's the cooler lines it will leak anytime the cooling system is pressurized and will leak down until it loses pressure. Ie, you could be full of coolant and night and park it and check it in the morning and be low. If it's leaking there it's probably leaking no matter how you park it, it may just be running down a frame rail or pooling somewhere. Check coolant levels no matter what.
We went camping this past week and had no issues with Beast while driving. Once we parked for the night the next morning I discovered coolant had leaked out, about 1.5 gallons. It did not leak while hot but only once cooled off. Today I added fluid and noticed it began to leak as soon as I added it. I climbed on top of the engine compartment and with a flashlight looked for some sign of water coming from the EGR cooling line, nothing, top of the engine was dry. Once the coolant temp passed 100 degrees the leak stopped and did not return the entire trip home, about 125 miles. I towed a trailer the first 40 miles then was unattached after that. Coolant temp never passed 198 on the highway at speed with either the trailer or alone. I am hoping to get some pictures of the leak on Monday so hopefully someone can help identify the problem. I think I know what the issue is but would like confirmation first.
