Surging

I've got an early 04 build with 178K miles that's developed a surge at all throttle positions. It will do it at idle or going down the road. It's got a soft code P2287, which tells me I probably need to replace the ICP sensor again (ugh). It will also occasionally generate a P132B. I'm guessing I also need to clean the turbo. I know the turbo was replaced early in it's life, but I know I've never cleaned it, and dad doesn't ever remember Ford cleaning it. It doesn't surge all the time, but when it starts it will continue for a while. I haven't managed to log the data using Torque yet, but when it was doing it the other day, I did catch the HPOP when it did. It dropped from 1200+ to 800 then back to 1100 all in about a second. It also looked like the IPR% jumped from 38 to 52 then back to around 40 at the same time. If I'm going to pull the turbo to clean it, should I consider changing the IPR while I'm in there, given the mileage on it? I'm also pretty sure the y-pipe is leaking too. Am I on the right track here? Any suggestions?

I'm by no means an expert but I had the same type issue and the guys on here suggested unplugging the icp sensor and seeing if the surging goes away. if not check your ipr screen.

Finally got around to fixing the surge. I cleaned the turbo (wasn't bad really), replaced the ICP, and while I was in there, replaced the IPR since it's so hard to get to. Turns out there were some debris on the screen, looked mostly like pieces of that POS Dorman oil cooler gasket. Also replaced the leaking y-pipe. Some combination of these things fixed the surge, and it runs perfect now and no error codes.

Surge was the ICP and those gasket pieces from the POS Dorman oil cooler..... unless you replaced that POS as well, WILL be back to haunt you!

I actually saw his comment earlier so I went on Dormans website and they claim the gasket was changed to a pruple gasket....and they claimed its been "updated" a few times.....

I know trucks with Dorman oil coolers without issues....but it seems like its not an IF but WHEN type of issue.

I am slowing changing my mind on their products

That they are worse than originally thought.

That sorry POS was put in before we really knew the problems with them. And yes, it's long gone, it's ghost is just still hanging around some. The cooler might actually have been ok when I replaced it, but I'd had enough and went back to OEM.

Great to hear, to bad the gaskets still killing you! That new ICP should cure the surge. Now the real reason... your oil. I had the surge as well, running T6. Went thru 4 sensors and have switched to Delo 5w-40 or Valvoline Premium Blue 5W-40. It's on sale at Napa... go get some for $19 a gallon, Delo is always at Walmart for that price.
The switch..HAS cured my surging because I refused to pay another $130 for the 5th sensor. If your running crappy oil, it's clogging the sensor. I did a thread on this topic about 2 or 3 months ago, several members tried it and said the same thing... cured the surging with an oil switch... just saying.

My '05 has had 3 surging episodes since the rebuild (+/-30k miles). 2 while using Rotella dino and once (the most recent) using Valvoline full syn. It's going to the shop on tuesday, I will have them pull the IPR.

Got her back from the shop. My mechanic says that the oil filter that Valvoline uses is about 1/8" shorter than the Motorcraft filter and aeration may be occurring that may be causing the surging. I should know better.
