I have an E-350 Camper (it sits for about 9 months of the year) ,351,auto with two factory air pumps. The air pumps are giving me greif, lots of belt squeal I had bought two new pumps a couple years ago for over 225 dollars each I dont want to spend that kinda money again. Ive run the it for about 20 miles with out the air pump belt and it seemed perfect no problems at all. My question is should I do anything else beyond removing the belt? Will running with out air pumps cause other problems with the engine? Any advice is highly apprecieated. Thanks Jack
Here's my 2 cents. I would put the belts back on and tighten the pulleys up so they don't squeal, ( i think squeal is from loose belts)and maybe put some dry graphite on the belts. Don't run it without the pumps. Keep everthing working.
D Harry thanks for the reply. The problem is not a loose belt its the air pumps they are seizing up due to all the down time (9 months a year) the pumps are expensive 225 each and I dont want to buy them again. I just dont know if running with out the air pumps is a bad thing.
It won't hurt your truck leaving the belts off. As stated in the previous post all they do is add air to the exhaust to help complete the combustion of any unburnt fuel. As long as you don't have to worry about emision inspections, then leave the belts off.
Thanks guys Ill be leaving the belts off since it just pumps air into the exhaust the yearly inspection will be a problem but I can always put the belt on for the inspection. Thanks again Jack
Does the vehicle just sit for 9 months straight, or do you start it occasionally? If it just sits, that could be the whole problem. If it is possible, start it and run it at least once a week, for about 15 minutes. Run the a/c, if equipped at the same time, to keep the seals from drying out. I know that the pumps say not to use oil in them too, but with the current ones, try spraying a liquid graphite oil into the pumps air intake while the engine is running. This may help the problem.

E-350 gasser air pump?
*** has air pumps pretty darn cheap..... I was told if you take the air pump off or disable it, you can clog the catalytic converter...could be hearsay, but not sure, maybe somone else can add to this one...
