I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and had the flywheel resurfaced 7,000 miles ago when I put in a new engine. The truck now shutters like crazy in 1st or reverse with a load. Seems to be worse with warm weather and/or a hot engine. The clutch replacement parts were aftermarket not Ford. There doesn't appear to be excessive oil inside the bell when I look through the inspection hole. The drive shaft u-joints are all new and the trans mount bolts and tight. This shuttering is a pain and it appears to be getting worse. Am I looking at a trans pull and a new clutch assembly?
I spoke to a top flight racing mechanic night about doing the job - I don't have the trans jack or I might try it myself. He said there is standard duty and a heavy duty clutch kit available for most applications. He recommended the heavy duty as I pull trailers with skid steers quite a bit. I can't seem to locate the heavy duty type. I tried Advance Auto and went online as well.
Check your hydraulics, mine did the same thing when I upgraded the clutch on my T18, turned out the standard duty clutch was fine but the master and slave were shot. It's a lot easier and cheaper to fix external hydraulics than to have somebody pull the tranny and tell you there is nothin wrong with the clutch.
I didn't get the clutch in question from Advance - I was just checking with Advance for a heavy duty application.
If the problem is in the hydraulics I'd still have to have the tranny pulled to get to the slave. And if the master is leaking wouldn't I see fluid on the firewall inside the cab?
It depends on what transmission you have. My assumption is that an 88 3/4 ton wouldn't have a Mazda 5spd(internal slave) if you have a 4spd then the slave is external, if it's a 5spd then it's probably a ZF I'm not sure what the hydraulics are like on those.
As for the Master, mine didn't leak any fluid that I saw.
