10" to 11" clutch

So I ordered all new parts for my tranny I got flywheel clutch pressure plate throw out bearing, my problem is the old clutch was 10" and they sent me 11". So far so good, but will my bell housing work on the 11" clutch? I almost have it back together but I lack about a half inch of being together, so I stopped for the night, my question is will the bell housing I have work with the 11" clutch? Thanks. Tomarrow I'll try and get it together.

First let me say I don't know %100 but here is my take on it after thinking of doing the same on my 81 F100 w/T18.

Remember the disc and where the disc rides on the PP are only 1/2" dia bigger.
I can not see the out side of the pp being bigger only the part in contact with the disc.

The flywheel cant be any bigger in dia or it would not line up with the starter so I cant see why it would not fit inside the bell housing.

As for the last half inch, did you try the pilot bushing on the input shaft to make sure it goes on all the way? Same with the disc if it fits?
It could also be the disc is not fully centered so the input shaft will not slide in like it should. Try pushing in on the clutch pedal so the disc can "center" and then see if the trany will go the rest of the way in.

thanks for the input, I am gonna get back to it tomarrow, you know I use to do tranny swaps years ago without any problems, but being a lot older now takes it out of me a lot quicker. Goes along with getting older I guess. Plus I have had three back surgeries. i'll post once I get it done. Hopefully tomarrow. Thank you much

Ford had one bell housing for each engine, but usually had two sizes of clutch. I've added a page on clutches here: Clutch - ???Gary's Garagemahal. You can see that most engines had two sizes of clutch.

While it is always best to include that info in your post for help, in this case it doesn't matter. As you can see from the link I sent, essentially all of the engines had two different clutch sizes. But 10" was the smallest and yet an 11" clutch was also offered for those engines that got a 10", and the bigger clutch still fit in the same bell housing.

For whatever it is worth, my son has a 1984 F150 and I drive a 1986 F150. Both trucks have the 4.9L engine with 4 speed manual OD transmissions. Both, when needing a new clutch, were upgraded from 10" to 11". The flywheel on both trucks came from the factory drilled for either clutch size. The only "hiccup" was that the diameter of the flywheel holes is different for the 11" clutch. This was easily remedied by purchasing new bolts.

Same flywheel (EOTZ-6375-A) used with the 10" & 11" clutches.

Anther oddity, David - Tim tells me that some M/400 flywheels were drilled for both an 11" and a 12" clutch. And the holes for the 11" clutch are actually further out, meaning closer to the edge of the flywheel, than the 12" clutch. Further they, too, take a different bolt size.

Fixed it for you, as originally, this was not the case.

In 1985 (!), Ford replaced both the 351M (D7TZ-6375-E / Marked: D7TE-DE) & 400 (D7TZ-6375-D / Marked: D7TE-CE) flywheels with E5TZ-6375-H

The 1985 part number is laughable, considering that these two engines were cancelled at the end of the 1982 model run.

If you look in your 1980/89 truck (3/1994 final edition) catalog, only E5TZ-6375-H is listed for 351M & 400.

No hint of the original part numbers is listed, just their marked ID numbers.

Thanks, Bill. I was aware of that from looking at the catalog or, easier, my page here: Flywheels - ???Gary's Garagemahal.

But, the oddity was that the 12" holes are in a smaller diameter circle than the 11" holes, so I didn't want to go into the complications of what flywheel came out when.

Yes. The 1981 owner's manual calls for "Standard Transmission Lube" for all 3-speed, 4-speed, and 4-speed overdrive manual transmissions.
