Water pump leak

Hi guys, I replaced my water pump on my 2000 Excursion 7.3 about six months ago because it was leaking from the little hole underneath. Everything was fine until today I noticed a big stain on my driveway under the front of the truck. I took a look and the new pump is leaking. It seems to be coming from the the back of the water pump where it sits flush against the engine.
Could the gasket have deteriorated or cracked? I bough it from a local parts store called part source, so it should be under warranty. Any thoughts?

Take the one you have and return it, then go buy one from Riffraf Diesel and be done with it. I had the same issue, after the 3rd time just gave the pump back and bought a good one. Been good for over a year now. I bet its the first time in a long while my 7.3 cooling system has held pressure. lol

I always put some RTV on the paper gaskets whenever I do a water pump on any vehicle. So long as it's thin and you keep it away from the passages, it seals nicely and doesn't gum the system up.

To Matt's point, it goes without saying that RTV is required on the 7.3 pump seals. Every time I've reinforced the seal with RTV, I haven't had one leak on me yet.

When are you going to put some on mine?

I've done 5 or 6 water pumps on 7.3's and have always used OEM units from Clay at Riffraff. I've only ever used the rubber ring type gasket that comes with the pump without any additional RTV, and I've been good to go with never any leaks.

Maybe I may not have had to use RTV on the O'reilly pumps I've used to replace failed water pumps on a 7.3, but for me it was always a "better safe than sorry" thing.

I don't remember what the gasket type was when Razzi and I did mine. It was definitely sourced from O'Reilly's as time was a 'need it right now' issue. I know for sure RTV went on it to be safe, it's just a precaution I have used on every single water pump regardless of vehicle type.
