Leaking water pump

My 2001 Ex with the 7.3 powerstroke diesel recently started to smell like anti freeze when I got out of the vehicle. Upon inspection, it appears to be leaking from the vent hole in my water pump. I called my dealer and I have an appointment for wednesday to get it fixed under waranty. My question is, since I only have 34,300 miles on my
Ex, is this an unusual occurance, or do I need to do something to prevent this in the future?

I would have to say that was kind of premature. You just never know. I have not had any waterpump problems, but lost a fuel pump at 36k. Good luck!

KennyG228,
I had to replace the waterpump on my 2000 F350 at 60000mi. I started smelling antifreeze it just as you did also. I change thermostat in hopes off fixing it. But it turned out to be the pump instead. They aren`t cheap!!!

I check on prices from every supplier in my area. Somewhere around $200-300 for rebuilt and new.

Carquest had a new lifetime warranty for $130. It was an awesome price. Their rebuilt was $190 with a $40 core charge. Go figure.

This is most disappointing I just did the 30,000 mile service and all seemed o.k. I'm glad that it is still under waranty. Even with the deductable it will be cheaper than doing it myself.
