water pump installation

I was just wondering if you have to put sealant on the threads of the water pump bolts on a 94 f150 with a 5.0l? because it is still leaking and I can't figure it out?

The threads shouldn't need any sealant. Did you put a gasket on that came with the pump? Also, if you don't clean the old gasket/sealant off from the old pump off the engine then it can leak. When I do water pumps, I spend a good 20-30 minutes cleaning the old stuff off the engine. Trust me, it is time WELL spent.

You didn't say where it was leaking from. If it is comming out of the hole on the under side of the shaft housing, don't worry. New pumps often leak from that hole until the new seal inside seats itself against the impeller. I know it's new and shouldn't leak but it's not uncommon. Just drive it for a few miles and it should stop. Good luck.

just out of curiosity, how many miles is a few. i replaced my water pump about 200 miles ago and just noticed it leaking this morning. drove another 80 miles today and still leaking. 95 f 150 w/ 5.0 i didnt use any liquid sealer, just clean everything really good (about 30 mins) and installed new gasket and pump. any tips would be great, i dont want to have to pull the pump again.

sorry for jacking the post. and thanks again

If the leak was due to the new seal not seating it would clearup after 5-10mi. I've even let the engine idle for 10-15min. in the shop and the seal seats and the leak stops. You still haven't mentioned where it is leaking from. If it's the gasket, then you know what you have to do. If it's comming out the weep hole on the bottom of the shaft, after 200mi. then the seal is bad and again, the pump must come off. Good luck.

sorry for not ,akimg note of where the leak was from. i looked into it a little more and found that the leak was coming from the gasket b/w the pump and the block. i checked the bolts and they were all loose. i tightened them to 18 ft/lbs the day before and in 100 miles, all were loose. retightened to 18 ft/lbs and all has been good since. any past experience of this happening, i have done about 5 water pumps and never had that happen before.

thanks again

Don't recall ever having ALL the bolts coming loose like that before. You know what they say "Fact is Stranger than Truth."
