Does an x block, mirror105/501, 1974 block make it better or able to bore over more, the shop here in Fairbanks wants to line bore and do about $1500 worth of machine work to do a short block, there is no sonic testing here,
Apparently the mirror 105 blocks (cast at MCC) used a better core setting process that significantly reduced core shift compared to the DIF blocks. See post linked below. So the mirror 105s can indeed be over bored a little more than most of the earlier DIF blocks but it's not because they have thicker cylinder walls. It's only because they have much less core shift. Regarding the pitting I agree with 69gt. If you are going to go for a minimum cut and leave the pitted area north of the top ring max travel then for sure have the machine shop smooth out any sharp corners/edges. If not you will probably experience a detonation issue.
