I acquired a 390 don't know what year, I will get numbers off block when I get the motor. I want to put it in a early 80's f100 or f150. I want to paint it primer red with a semi gloss clear coat and stock white wheels but want to widen the rears to put something like the old m50 15's on it. I want to build the motor to where its around 375 to 400hp. I don't want a solid cam and I don't want to have to use a stall spd convertor but if I have too not a very high stall. Maybe a small shot of nitrous if it will me help reach my goal. I want to stay away from adjustable rockers if possible. I am wanting to use a 650 or 750 dual pumper carb,headers,c6 tranny, and 355 to 410 gears in the rear end. I've built a couple small blk mopars, this is my 1st ford build. I need recommendations on cams, lifters, intake, ignition, and head work/valve work. I want it to turn heads when people hear it . So help me out please.
First off, those M50 tires, what are they, 40 years old?
A 390 can make that kind of power with mostly stock heads, valves, lifters etc.
Your power upgrades on a 390 are first in getting decent compression. 9.5 or 10ish can run pump gas, and stock pistons (car 390 or pickup 360) will work.
Exhaust: Stock manifolds are power killers, look into quality headers like Sanderson.
Cam: "lumpy" is where you are going.
Other details can be found at this thread, with multiple links, especially in post 7:
The FE motor has seen increased interest in the last few years. Note that CarCraft link goes 446 stroker. The upgrades shown to that engine can apply to a 390. You will not be a 500/500 but it will be quite a bit cheaper.
Provide us with some casting numbers. Measure your bore. If block was bored once before then it could be ify. Do those things first before thinking of building or buying parts.
