Well it could have been several things. Sadly FE's are virtually impossible to identify by casting number(with a few exceptions).
The C6ME block is listed as:
1966-68 428 4.13" bore
1966-67 410 4.05"
1968-76 360 4.05"
the latter two are exactly the same, with the only difference being the rotating assembly that was used. As to the 428, I'm not 100% sure(have never had the luck of finding one), but I think the 428's had a scratch mark "A" on the back. I would just measure the bore, see what it's at, and if you're gonna build it you'd have it sonic checked anyways. Then you would know for sure if it "could" go to a 428 bore. Just my 2cents.

C6ME-A
1967 352 4.00" bore
1968-76 360 4.05"
1966 390 4.05"
1966-67 410 4.05"
1966-68 428 4.13"

Pretty much the same stuff. I'd be skeptical of the 428, given all it's availability in the smaller bore block. MOST of the 352/360/390/410 blocks will not go .080 over. Get it cleaned up and bore measured and you'll know more of what you have. Who knows it may be a 428 block, he kept it for a long time maybe that's why.
It's a hydraulic lifter block by the way.

Since it's the bare block, measure the bore. That'll tell you what you have more than anything else.

Actually, that's not true. It can be almost any FE, a 352, 360, 390, etc.

Yeah almost all FE's have 352 cast into them. That or they have a mirror 105.

Too bad you dont want to build an fe. The 300 is great too though. Glad we could help. Good luck with it!

playing with a 352 in my shop right now. it's in a 1963 gal 500xl convert. pita won't start.
art it's funny as this one has 352 cast right into the left front of the block another ford we have has a 406 and it has that cast into it's block. ford can drive a mechanic crazy.
