Thanks to petemcl, das54 and ranger pat - your information from last month about wheel sizes and offsets was extremely helpful. We got a set of wheels and tires on the truck today - first time on its feet since June. The hardest part was finding a 17" wheel with a 0 offset, for less than a small fortune, that I actually liked. I found them through a dealer in Quebec (I'm way on the other side of Canada in Vancouver) but it turned out they have a warehouse locally here, and we got the right wheels in a day. So this week had some successes.
Ended up with a ATX Series Mojave II wheel (17X8) that looked truckey enough - I didn't want a five-spoke Mag on this particular truck. Its an off-road wheel, and with tall black-wall Uniroyal Laredo tires (265/70 r17) I really like the look. It needs spacers at the back because as DAS54 and Ranger Pat said that explorer rear-end is just enough narrow that I need to push the wheels out a bit more, even with the 0 offset.
Yes, I like those. Good job finding them. Just remember that your speedo will be off significantly with those taller tires.
We definitely have to test that - the good news is there's free smartphone gps-based apps that will help us do that easily. I am not sure how much it will be off though, as the total wheel/tire height is just over 30" and the original wheel/tire height we replace sat at 30".
