I recently changed out my wheels so i can comfortably run my 315 75r16's. I was unaware of and excited about the wheels so i neglected to even check the offset. I put the wheels on ( 16x10 ) and the offset was so far off that they were only on the truck for 2 days. I had bad rubbing and was told i would need to lift the truck about 3in to make them work comfortably. I have a 2.5in lift on the front as its a 350srw its got the 4in rear block so to level it i put in the 2.5in leaf pack up front. I had my mechanic put my new tires back on my OE king ranch wheels. 16x7. They run smooth and great but buldges to much . Goodyear recomends a 8-10in wide wheel and i am only running a 7. So i want to get another set of wheels somthing around 8-8.5in wide. But does anyone know what the offset is for the stock wheels so i can match them up more closely. Thanks for the help.
Take one of your stock wheels off the truck. The tire can be on it, it doesn't matter. Flip it over so you're looking down at the back side of the wheel. Get yourself a straight-edge of some kind that's long enough to go accross the wheel from rim edge to rim edge, but not so long that the tire interferes with it. Maybe cut down an old piece of wood or something. Take that straight edge, lay it accross the wheel, and take a ruler or tape measure and measure straight down from the bottom of the straight edge to the back side of the wheel mounting surface (where the wheel lugs come through the wheel), the side that goes against the truck's hub, not the side that you see from the front when the wheel is on the truck. This measurement is called backspacing.
Write that measurement down and when you go to the wheel shop, ask for wheels with the same backspacing as your stock wheels. A wider wheel with the same backspacing will have different offset, since offset is the relationship between the center of the wheel (accross the width of it) and the location of the wheel mounting surface (back side of the part of the wheel that goes against the hub on the truck). So your new wheels will have the same backspacing as the stockers, but more width and more positive (??) offset. I forget which direction is positive and which is negative, sorry.
The factory wheels have a 0 offset so you have 3.5" of backspacing. A buddy of mine runs 315/75/16B BFG's on 16 x 10 Weld Cheyennes. He has a leveling kit just as you and the only place he rubs is on the leaf springs at full turn. The wheels have 4 5/8" backspacing. If you ran a 16 x 8 wheel you'd only have 3 5/8" backspacing and no rub anywhere. I know that the tire mfg. probably calls for a 9" min width but I run 305/70/16 BFG AT's on my stock wheels and they are wearing and handling great so far at around 20K on them. The narrow rims will probably cost me 5-10K off the life of the tire, but one bad hit from rubbing in the wrong place at the wrong time will cost a whole lot more than that. ]
That was my problom and worry the one time bad hit. I had gotten 16x10 wheels and put them on these 315 75r 16 tires and it rubbed bad and im running a F-350 with a 2.5in leveling kit up front. Oddly enough it didnt run the leafs. it rubbed the air dam in the front under the bumper and it rubbed inside behind the tire on the mud flap inside the wheel well. i cut the flap so that corrected that problom thought everything was good now and then on like a right hand turn braking like at a light the trucks weight of course went down up front and it started rubbing on the outside body molding to the back of the tire. I have the KR and this tire was chipping away at my nice fender molding. didnt seem good to me so im back to my stock 16x7 wheel. I wanna get away from it since i dont feel all THAT good about having that big of a tire on my stock wheel. i just need to get a wheel like 16x8.5 with close back spacing to mine and things will be fine. You say my offset is zero that makes ALLOT of sence since its the factry wheel its already in the right place. You got it! And also, the more centered a wheel mounting point is, the less wear and tear on the steering knuckles, ball joints, and all those other troublesome front end parts on these trucks. Also remember that you need a stout wheel. Wheels are one place not to skimp. I can see though that you don't skimp. I was so pi$$ed off that the KR came out the year after I bought mine. Those seats are awesome. How are they wearing? I'm actively looking for a '03 CC with the 7.3L. I guess I'm sentimental for that motor. I'm not knocking the 6.0L though. They have great power, and you can hear yourself think. The 7.3L been good to me though, and change isn't one of likes. Anyway, most of the forged wheels out there have good load ratings. Look for at least a 3200-3500lb. capacity wheel. I also feel that a good quality chrome wheel is the way to go. Soap and water is all they need to stay looking great. I'm not one to put in the time it takes to keep a polished wheel looking new.
Thankyou have been a good help the KR is awsome i get people all the time at lights and here and there taking like a second look. all the ford guys have seen the harley but not many have seen the KR. i get so many questions and they all even non ford owners love the interior. its not hard to keep up. down here in fortlauderdale the heat is so bad that they kinda dry up and you need to keep them moist since its real leather. you cant use regular leather conditioner either so i'v heard . i dont take the chance and i use the KR leather cleaner fron KRsaddleshop.com its kidna pricy its like 12 bucks a bottle and these seats soak it up like theres no tomorrow. I use a bottle every tow times i condition which is like one bottle every 2 months. it makes the seats look SO much better and keeps the truck smeeling brand new. everyone gets in and is allways amazed at the inside. I also get alot of looks because im young and people dont think i should be driving such a nice truck. im only 23 be 24 in may so i pull into ford no one gives me the time of day but when i go to my truck its service out the waaazzooooo. funny how that works. thanks for the help on the wheels i really need to get somthing these kinda make me nervous especially since i do about 80miles aday round trip....3.5backspacing and close to 0 offset(what i need) the wheels i have in the garage now i took off are awsome wheels i wish i could use them in the 16x8 instead of the ones in the garage 16x10 (-31mm offset , 4 1/4 backspacing). the 16x8's are offset of -5mm but they are 4 1/4 back spacing that will push the tire out right? gee what a mess. i just worry i know these arent going to fall of the wheel but i dont like risking anything i like things right. thanks again for your help
I keep finding 4.5in back spacing of wheels for the 16x8 or 16x9. will this be a problom. the ones i am seeing that i like are 16x9 4.5in backspacing with like -5mm offset that doesnt seem to be to much am i mistaken?
Thanks alot i am going to try and get some 16x8 with the 4.5in back spacing. i am just trying to get all the information i can. these tires have been put on and taken off 3 times in the past 2 weeks because wheels were hidding my nice trim on the outside with my 16x10 with the same back spacing the difference is -5mm offset (16x8) and -31mm offset (16x10) i would just hate to buy these wheels and find them to be a problom again. im on the stocks now and it dont look good. but i dont want to try another set unless im sure. they dont take returns once they are mounted and balanced and its also 50 bucks to change out the wheels everytime. thanks for the help really wish i could find a 16x9 with 0 offset of close to 0 and 4.5in back spacing.

16x8 with 4.5" backspacing will put the tire 1" CLOSER to the leaf springs than the factory offset. For a 16x8 rim to have 0 offset, it will need a 4" backspace. 16x9 w/4.5 will give you 0 offset.
You posted that you found some 16x9 w/4.5 backspacing...won't these work for you?
i Miss read. i found 16x8 that are back spacing 4.5in. with -5mm offset. I found 16x9 with 4.5in back spacing but i can't find what their offset is. But you are saying that a 16x9 with 4.5in backspacing should be 0 offset but 1in closer to the leaf and with my 315 ,75r's thats going to rub the leafs bad huh? , but not hit my outside flares(body molding).
Offset is the amount, or distance, the wheel hub is from the center line of the rim. A rim that is 9" wide with a 4.5" backspacing has 0 offset. An 8" rim w/4.5" b.s., such as you described above, would have a 3.5" offset.
5mm is approximately 3/16", so I do not understand where you are getting that figure, as we are talking about a little over 3/4" in difference here.
Basically, for your needs, you are looking for a backspacing equal to half of whatever rim width you choose to achieve 0 offset.
The 16x8 american eagle wheel i was looking at say 4 1/4 back spacing -5mm offset. I found a set of Helo Guns that are nice as well they are 16x9 with also 4 1/4 i belive backspacing. Now since its an in wider with the same back spacing whats that mean... wheels stay in same place but inch further on the outside..
There's the difference, 4 1/4"...you posted earlier that it was 4 1/2".
Yes, this would give you 1/4" (actually 3/16") further out towards the wheel well over the stock rim with the 9" rim. The 8" rim with the same back spacing (4 1/4") will put the rim 1/4" CLOSER to the LEAF springs.
What was the back spacing on the 10" rims you already tried?
Austin said above that he has a friend with 10", 4 5/8" backspacing, which put his rim 3/8" closer to the springs over stock. This would be even closer than the 9" rims you are looking at. It is said his only rubbed at full lock which would imply that yours would rub less so.
