Replaced the 4r100 in my 2001 Excursion about a month ago. At that time the hub's were switched off for the first time in the year I have owned the rig. Now my 4 wheel drive will not engage, and light will not light up on the dash, even when key is on but truck not running. 4 wheel and dash worked before swap. What is up?
check the plug on the top drivers side of the transfer case, make sure it's fully seated. If that is good check the relays under the hood next to the fuse box. If you have factory esof hubs check the vacuum lines for cracks.
It has to be an electrical problem--the vacuum lines cannot affect the light or the switch. Check the wire harness for cracked or worn insulation near the transfer case in addition to the steps mentioned above. Dirt or oil in the connection to the transfer case could cause a bad connection.
Another problem could be the switch itself--a switch that does not get used for a long time can accumulate dirt inside the switch module itself due to air flow in the cab. When switches of all types are assembled, a small amount of grease is placed in the switch to make them work properly. This can over time harden and interfere with switch operation by acting as an insulator.

Since the trans was just replaced, I'd venture to a guess that the plug is the culprit. There are actually two plugs, check both. The other one is below and forward the one I mentioned earlier IIRC. If that all checks out, there are several fuses that can cause problems. Were the batteries unhooked when the trans was replaced?

yes batteries were disconnected while working on the transmission. I'll be checking the white harness when I get a chance. Hopefully before winter hits.

I finally got around to checking it out. Loose plug on drivers side of t case. Feel a little dumb but hope this helps someone someday. Thanks to all
