On my 97' F-250 I am able to shift between 2h and 4h (both work well) but I am unable to shift between neutral and 4l. Ive been spraying the linkage with lots of penetrating oil. Any other ideas?
Replace entire assembly with the older style (thru 1991 I believe) linkage. Otherwise you will need to remove your shifter and take it apart to clean up where it is seized and put a grease fitting in the housing to keep it lubed up.
Does the shifter move up and down (not forward and back, but _up_ and _down_) in 4HI, and does it allow you to go from 4HI to neutral when you push it down? If so, does it come back up when you get to Neutral?
Don't know I'll try that when I get home. If the transfer case isn't the issue what would you suggest in order to fix the shifter?
The shifter really doesn't move except forward and backwards between 2h and 4h. The spring compresses a little when I push downward while in 4h. The shifter doesn't go into N.
You may already know this but it hasn't been mentioned yet.
The transmission has to be in neutral in order to shift into 4Lo. Put the truck in neutral, shift the t-case into 4HI, push down and then pull back on the shifter.

I've tried doing it when the truck is in neuteral before. But isn't it the same as park. Ive tried both.
Slide under the truck and have a buddy operate the shifter. You'll see how the pin and lockout plate interact. Pay close attention esp. when your assistant does the "push down" part in 4HI; see if the shifter moves down far enough for the pin to clear the blockout plate. If it doesn't, there's your trouble; the up-down action on the linkage is stuck. Common issue with these shifters. "Nuclear" option is to cut the pin off so it doesn't have to clear the plate. Some fellas have drilled into the side of the linkage and inserted a zerk fitting and lubed it to get the up-down action working again.
Remove the shifter, clean, lubricate and reassemble. Grease fittings are optional but won't hurt. It's not like you need to service it more then about once every decade and a half anyway.

I'd just like to point out that replacing it with the old style is as much or more work than removing, repairing and adding a grease fitting to the current one and is significantly more expensive.

The up down action on the lever is not working. I am considering cutting the pin off like you had mentioned. Would you advise against that?
