Re-crimp a leaking radiator?

'95 F350/460/5spd 102,000 miles, a clean rig. Radiator looks good on the outside, very clean inside, small leak lower right side where tank & core join. Has anyone had long term success by tightening the crimp w/visegrips, channel locks, etc?

I haven't...and it's best to replace with a quality one.

When they start leaking there, it's a matter of time before they get worst.

Maybe so one else has. I haven't had luck with trying to stop them from leaking.

Crap load of epoxy, plus vice grips holding it solid, plus time, equals a good temp repair. Also leave the cap off to so no pressure can force it all back apart at the next weak point.

Thanks for replies. Radiator is out, for now put in one from a '94 w/E4OD, plugged bypass nipple w/a metal screw. I kind of wondered about a 20 yr old radiator of this type; also wonder about quality of replacements that cost about $100 from Rockauto. Tho one from Advance in the Jeep is 2 yrs old, so far so good.

I tried the reseal a tank seam on my 89's radiator. But it was not the crimp causing the leak. Stupid tank cracked making the tank seal look bad.

New radiator fixed it......

Cut the crimps, remove the plastic tanks, but a small sheet of 1/8" aluminum and TIG yourself a triple pass, all aluminum radiator. Depending on where you can source your aluminum plate it's quite a bit cheaper than a quality radiator.

This is assuming you have, or have access, to a TIG....

Otherwise your best option is to replace the radiator. You can take it to a radiator shop and have them crimp on new tanks but that's your only other realistic option.

Well, I'm hearing what I'd hoped not to. Scheme is pull engine over Thanksgiving, remove 2 broken exhaust manifold bolts & AIR system. Recondition cooling system including new core plugs etc, new vacuum lines, plus general clean up.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Recrimp a leaking radiator

I had a radiator on my 1994 Jag XJ6 re-crimped over 5 years ago because it had a leak at one of the plastic tank attached to the side of the radiator. Took the radiator to a radiator/tire shop. They repaired it. No leaks since. They re-crimped both plastic tanks. If done correctly, it works. I own a 1987 F-250. The basic radiator design is similar to my Jaguar radiator. Plastic tanks on the side. Crimped to the radiator. It cost me less than $50.00. Better than paying over $450.00 for a new Jaguar radiator.
