Guys, my truck drives and changes gear great, but the gear selector is sloppy. It's a 69 F100 with a C6 (column shifter).
The action is vague/sloppy with no clear feedback as to what position it's in. I have to very careful to make sure it's in Park and then sometimes it will end up in neutral when I've aimed for drive, or vice versa. I've tolerated this for a couple of years now, but when I started it up yesterday, blipped the throttle and it shot backwards that was not good!!
I'm assuming that this is a wear thing and so stuff will need replacing instead of adjusting, but haven't had to mess with shifters/linkage before. Would be grateful for advice on what parts I likely need to check/adjust/replace. Thank you.
Many times you'll need to pull it all down, the shift stick head selector pin get sloppy then the inner selector tube maybe also warn out it's a guess game when trying to say what's wrong with it.
LMC Has a pretty good of selection of replace parts but only you can inspect all the parts. Crawl under the truck an inspect all the linkages for loose bushing ect.
If you don't have a catalog then order one as there free from most co's.
So your truck may have a good amount of down time unless you can find a good column at the junk yd.
Orich
Orich is right on the money. I'm taking his advice and I'm watching for a suitable replacement from a parts truck so I can rebuild it and then my truck won't be down so long. Also that way I can break it down and figure out exactly what parts to order because they add up pretty fast.
Thanks for the replies and yes, I guess there's no easy way with this one. Though I'll probably just have to try and assess as best I can what needs replacing and then buy whatever that is because I'm in the UK and finding a parts truck probably isn't going to happen.
